Track 1 is a straight ahead version of China Boy. Legend has it that this was one of the original "cutting tunes" at early jam sessions. Listen to the band tearing through this up tempo version as if they were trying to "cut" each other.

Next is Up The Lazy River, played in a laid back style and featuring horn breaks on the solos. The arrangement's mood is perfectly established by Chuck on the piano and the rest of the band just follows suit. After You've Gone starts with the flowing verse on trumpet, continuing through at the slower tempo before going into a full blown ripping double time. The solos are all first rate providing a refreshing rendition of an old standard.

Poor Butterfly is a trombone feature ballad, and one of the prettiest versions you will ever hear of this tune.

This unusual arrangement of Avalon begins with a full drum chorus at the top and adds just the tenor sax for the second chorus. The "Lester Young" style tenor playing is followed by the trumpet and trombone trading 4s with plunger mutes, probably the best exchange on the disc.

Limehouse Blues starts nice and relaxed going back and forth on the first chorus between straight time and a moving double time. From the end of the first chorus on to the end of the tune the band rides the double time to a rousing finish.

Sweet Substitute again features the tenor sax of Charlie Gabriel. The unusual but melodic changes along with the slightly enhanced form at the end of the tune, along with 2 solo choruses each provide the band a vehicle for a really enjoyable relaxed ride on the tune. Especially enjoy the buzz wow muted trombone solo.
