Mr. Guapo
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real ...

| | Demimonde Slumber Party Green CD (2005)
Mr. Guapo
$9.59 Demimonde Slumber Party (DSP) is a female-led indie rock band based in the lush, leafy town of Eugene, Oregon. Sixties garage rock served up with a heaping portion of psychedelic surf-punk & a side of math-pop make this musical feast your perfect midnight snack. Their exuberant set is a full-course fiesta featuring a calorie-burning cuisine of riot-grrrl romps and playful ballads with sweetly-honed harmonies. Plus they’re always sure to serve you some succulent make-out songs for dessert, like sweet treats on your pillow.Blame full-flavored founding member, singer/songwriter/guitarist Melissa Lubofsky for DSP’s genre-mincing sounds. Her smorgasbord of influences vary wildly - David Bowie, R.E.M., and Oingo Boingo, to name a few - but her eclectic style could be partly explained by early experiences as a reluctant math nerd. This may also have contributed to her tendency to complicate an innocent song until it\'s bordering on pop-punk prog. A neurotic idealist, she wishes she could find the recipe for saving each endangered species and turning everything green and sustainable. Failing that, her mission is to discover the ingredients for keeping a sense of humor and inspiring people to save the world in fun ...
| | Rebecca Pronsky Early Hours CD (2004)
Mr. Guapo
$12.69 ***Praise for "The Early Hours"***"As evidenced by the poignant 'Empty' from her latest CD, The Early Hours, her writing is literate, passionate, and wry."               ~ Time Out New York (October 6, 2005)"After listening to her six song E.P. The Early Hours I was hard pressed to come up with a contemporary pop artist she resembles, let alone one who I would want to compare her too... Her songs have an emotional edge that breaks through the usual wall of cool that surrounds so many female jazz vocalists... Rebecca Pronsky doesn't need to dazzle her audience with technique, and is a mature enough performer to have the confidence in her voice to let it be part of the material, rather than the centre of attention.... Rebecca Pronsky is a new and exciting vocalist who bears watching. She might just turn out to be the next…well, Rebecca Pronsky.              ~ Blogcritics.org (October 18, 2005)On "The Early Hours," New York-native Rebecca Pronsky offers six perfect songs that sound as natural and unforced as a spring breeze in late April... Rebecca's voice is both dark and hopeful, and she has surrounded herself with a first-rate band to help drive ...
| | James, Jr Soundproof Room CD (2002)
Mr. Guapo
$6.39 "It's a loud and crazy world/Find a sound you love." This line, from the title cut, encapsulates the artistic impetus of Jr. James & The Late Guitar's new disc. Sometimes finding the sound you love means filtering out the leaf blowers, lawn mowers, street buskers, and highway rustlers; sometimes it means accepting the noise, dissonance, and atonality of a hyper-electrified technological society and incorporating it all into your personal rock 'n' roll. Thank Jah for egg cartons, ear plugs, and mixing boards. This collection of tracks represents Jr. James & The Late Guitar's first sustained foray outside the basement environs of Dubatomic Studio, home of the band's four-track, and into the wild and woolly world of legit studio recording, replete with all the perplexing processors, capricious compressors, and mystifying meters, dials, and diodes that drive sonic junkie kuhrayzee. For the best in rootsy analog beauty, the band plugged in to Asheville, NC's Collapseable ...
