Footprints In The Sand
$15.89 Trombonist Ian McDougall's live date at the Cellar in Vancouver features several of Canada's top jazz musicians playing a bop-oriented set. McDougall has a warm sound and fluent technique on trombone, and he blends in well with tenor saxophonist Ross Taggart. Guitarist Oliver Gannon is a cool-toned veteran, while pianist Ron Johnston is lesser known outside of Canada but just as talented. The sextet plays three standards, including a trombone ballad feature on "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" and four basic originals, including a pair of blues. Fans of bebop will find this CD easy to like and should enjoy discovering these "new" players. ~ Scott Yanow
"The Ian MacDougall Sextet is Old School, as they say, on Nights in Vancouver and lord if they don't do it well. Trombonist McDougall holds to the model of well-tailored muscle that made high period Blue Note so thrilling, and his own 'Barbs Blues' nails that mix ...

Footprints In The Sand
$21.49 Ashanti's beginnings date back to 1983 when Berklee College of Music students from Mexico, Switzerland, Chile, Japan, and Connecticut launched a new musical project. Their Latin jazz combo, dubbed Ashanti to recognize the African roots of the music they loved to play, performed regularly at a variety of Boston-area clubs and concert venues, and even appeared on the local CBS and NBC affiliates. In 1984, Ashanti relocated to Cancun and enjoyed steady work in the city's finest hotels and clubs for eight years. The group was resurrected in 1995 when the Mayor of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico invited the Ashanti to perform a celebration concert in honor of the historic city's 453rd anniversary. In 1996 and shortly after being named Director of Jazz Studies at Central College in Iowa, founding member Gabriel Espinosa introduced a handful of local "gringo" R&B and jazz players to the sensuous Latin music he knew so well. Since then, the latest incarnation of Ashanti has earned high visibility and an impressive following ...

| | Massaron Breaking News CD (2006) (Import)
Footprints In The Sand
$16.59 Simone Massaron was born in Milano, Italy, in 1971.During the first 15 years of his life, he alternated piano, guitar and drums playing in different local bands. Only when he was around 16, he started studying jazz guitar and having concerts around Europe. Later on, focusing only on jazz, he deepened his studies with Roberto Cecchetto and took seminars with Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Mick Goodrick, Marc Ducret and John Scofield. He now follows many projects in which he expresses his eclecticism and his ability to move freely across many genres: radical improvisation, free avant-garde, looping, live electronics, visceral blues, live movie soundtracks,’60s lounge, sound painting, contemporary classic repertoire. His style is personal, ironical and unforeseeable and has an instrumental technique that allows him to venture into unexplored areas of guitar terrritory. He is one of Italy fretless guitar main representative and will participate to the up coming New York “Fretless Guitar Festival”.Moreover, he has played and worked together with Elliott Sharp, Nels Cline, Steve Piccolo, Gak Sato, Tiziano Tononi and Daniele Cavallanti.PROJECTS: “Breaking News Sextet” with: Steve Piccolo, Elliott Sharp, Tiziano Tononi, Daniele Cavallanti and special guest Nels Cline.“Bassless” with: Daniele Cavallanti and Tiziano Tononi“SI-MONO” solo fretless guitar project with live electronics.ABOUT "BREAKING NEWS":"… excellent debut album for a top level guitarist. (breaking news) is favoured by a grown up production and performers such as Steve Piccolo, Elliott Sharp, Tiziano Tononi and Daniele Cavallanti. Play it loud, and you will enjoy a passionate trip through rock, blues and jazz" (PAOLO CARU', www.caru.com, May '06) "….very bold indeed "Breaking News", the album by Simone Massaron, who plays any kind of electric guitar, variously modified, together with the Nexus duo, (Daniele Cavallanti and Tiziano Tononi) and two avant-gardist pillars, Steve Piccolo and Elliott Sharp. The result is a contagious free jazz, with an eye for no wave and alt rock. It makes one think of those ...
