| | Mika Pohjola Sound Of Village CD (2001)
Satya/Rated songs
$31.65 Sound of Village consists of 15 duo improvisations by the Finnish pianist Mika Pohjola and the multi-percussionist Yusuke Yamamoto. In addition to acoustic piano, Pohjola occasionally plays harpsichord and Fender Rhodes; Yamamoto is heard on drums as well as berimbau, talking drum, clay flute, and voice. The intuitive communication between the two is extraordinary, whether on dense and brooding pieces like "Ultimatum"; pastoral sketches like "Dandelion," "Season's Greetings," and "Designs and Shapes"; or hip, rhythmically driving episodes like "Tom's Favorite Treats." The shimmering sound of the Rhodes on "The Center of the Universe" and "Berceuse 1823" at times seems to reference both minimalism and electronica. "Desert Urbanism" and "Präludium und Variationen" feature harpsichord with berimbau and clay flute, respectively, resulting in a bold yet entirely uncontrived meeting of East and West. Sadly, the events of September 11, 2001, would transform the meaning of the title track in a way that these two skilled and imaginative musicians could never have foreseen. Pohjola, in his liner notes, tells listeners that he lives near a fire station and three hospitals. He and Yamamoto decided to record the traffic sounds and incorporate them on this particular track. Oddly, one of the liner photos is a black-and-white ...

He began playing music at the age of 8, and at 11, moved to the New York City area, studied with world-renowned masters, and began playing professionally soon after. As a multipercussionist, composer, and educator, he is devoted to the subtle and transformative power of the arts. In 1989, he received his Bachelor of Music from the Manhattan School of Music Conservatory and graduated with the school's award for "most outstanding percussionist." While living in NYC, he performed and/or recorded with such groups ...
| | Jimmy Eat World Static Prevails CD (1996) Bonus Tracks
Satya/Rated music CDs
$12.85 On its 1996 major-label debut, STATIC PREVAILS, Jimmy Eat World presents a fierce set of songs that lean heavily on the Arizona-based band's proto-emo roots. While the album hints at the group's later knack for blending guitar fury with pop melody (see the catchy "Call It in the Air"), it mainly stands out as a formative outing primarily suited for Jimmy Eat World diehards.
With their third album Clarity being one of the most overlooked masterpieces of 1999, Static Prevails is Jimmy Eat World paying their dues in 1996. It could be the slight over-production (a curse that has always haunted the band), being on a major label ...
