Sunhead King is not just the name of a musical group, it is a frame of mind. In Spain gypsies would gather for festivals of dance. The objective was to obtain ultimate freedom within each person. This was called finding the “Sun in your Head.” This allowed the individual to soar like the great bird in search of the soul penetrating rhythms of the land.The band Sunhead King was assembled from Chicago’s most unknown. Complete strangers brought together by chance and fate, the band formed in the latter part of 2001. The band members are: Jeremy Groh (guitar)Eugene Plascak (drums)RoB Van Hyfte (vocals)Will Zellner (bass)Sunhead King is composed of art, music, philosophy, and theater majors from various colleges across the Midwest. The music itself is intelligent and thought provoking. Their down beat rhythms and eclectic sounds make Sunhead King an instant attention grabber.Sunhead King has made great strides on the Chicago music scene. Building a strong and loyal following, the band has performed at major clubs such as Metro, Double Door, Abbey Pub, Elbo Room, The Note, Martyr’s, and Wise Fools Pub. The musical history of the band ranges from experimental and underground jazz, funk, rock, ethnic, and heavy metal.A full length independent self-titled CD was released in 2004, produced and engineered by Manny Sanchez (engineer of Billy Corgan’s most recent project, Zwan). The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. "So, what kind of music do you write?" That is a question that pumpshed guitarist Rick Allison is often asked. "We write music that we love, and that excites us. We do not intentionally restrict new song ideas to a particular style or genre" Rick remarks. "That said, I would describe pumpshed's music as modern rock with an edge". That may be a bit of an understatement. pumpshed's music is a well-balanced mix of meaningful lyrics and strong melodies over a solid foundation of driving rhythms and dynamic guitars. The band has a knack for writing songs that are interesting both instrumentally and lyrically, giving the listener a complete musical experience. "We try to write songs that would stand up on their own even without a vocal. Then, we try to lay in a strong melody and interesting lyrics over that framework" Rick comments. Described by one listener as a cross between Live, Our Lady Peace, and Third Eye Blind, it seems that pumpshed may be achieving that goal.Formed in 2000, pumpshed began life with 4 members - Rick on guitar, John Wellhouse on lead vocals, along with a full time drummer and bassist. Near the end of 2000, the drummer and bassist left to pursue other interests, leaving Rick and John to carry the torch. The two had written several songs over the course of the year, and were eager to record the new material. Luckily, John was also an accomplished drummer and Rick was no stranger to the bass guitar. So, the duo decided to postpone hiring on new members, and entered the studio alone to begin work on what would become their debut release, "Whispers Through A Megaphone".After a few detours and interruptions, "Whispers Through A Megaphone" was completed in 2005, and is a major accomplishment for the duo. An intriguing musical journey, the album explores a variety of emotions and musical styles.
