$13.59 This double-CD set is not only the best of Bill Chase's output but -- comprising all three of their albums -- virtually their complete finished studio work, before the plane crash that killed Chase and much of the group. The mastering on this Wounded Bird reissue is excellent, with a full solid bass sound topped by soaring highs on the brass and no compression to speak of. It's not as though this catalog has been overused, in terms of its master tape library -- apart from the hit "Get It On" -- but it's still good to know that the stuff has been well handled in terms of being digitalized. ...

Spoken Word Project album
$11.59 Forget Simon & Garfunkel. Virginia's Jonathan & Charles were a poor -- make that destitute -- man's Chad & Jeremy or Peter & Gordon. Take the more painfully precious quirks of those otherwise engaging duos, then strip away the top-shelf songs and dry English drollery (but not, oddly, the accents), and finally, add trite Bible-school pieties -- for every time one of the aforementioned acts sang "love" substitute "Jesus" -- and you basically have Another Week to Go, an album that seems determined to single-handedly stem the tide of sexual perversity during the Summer of Love with its vanilla-flavored virtue. Ironically, this ...
| | Ryan Mackstaller Nice Day For A Swim CD (2002)
Spoken Word Project CD music
$8.69 "Having begun as the Strange Brew Trio in 1999, the Ryan Mackstaller Trio was 'rooted in the music of John Scofield, Monk, Miles Davis, and Rashaan Roland Kirk.' In 2001, Mackstaller decided the trio should go a different direction and planned the release of original guitar trio music. And here we are, with the release of self produced Nice Day for a Swim in 2002. Some of the tracks on this album strike me as being Ambient jazz, with mellow and/or melancholy tones, while some others have hints of Fusion. The artists do not hold strongly to any particular genre, which is probably why their ...
| | Frank Macchia Animals CD (2004)
Spoken Word Project music CDs
$14.15 Frank Macchia has a strong record in soundtrack work, and that spilled over into his last album, Galapagos Suite. It's also quite evident here on Animals, where he attempts to paint aural pictures of albums. Yes, he uses a few exotic instruments -- electric sitar represents the camel, for example -- and there's some strong playing talent on hand, such as Billy Childs. But ultimately it falls somewhere between the jazz it's intended to be and inoffensive new age listening. There are humorous moments, such as the tuba that is the hippo, for example, and others of beauty, such as "Lone Wolf." But for the most part, valiant and heartfelt as it might be, there's little truly arresting about it. ~ Chris Nickson
Take a journey through a wildlife paradise as Frank Macchia's Animals creates jazz/world fusion impressions of exotic animals from around the world. Featuring solo performances by Mark Isham, Billy Childs, Vinnie Colaiuta, Grant Geissman, Bruce Fowler, Valarie King, Scott Breadman, Alex Iles, Dave Carpenter, Ken Kugler, Wayne Bergeron, Stefanie Fife and Tracy London, this CD captures the spirit of these wonderful creatures! Animals is a follow up to 2003's critically acclaimed CD "The Galapagos Suite", which Larry Nai of Cadence magazine raves " Macchia's coloristic sense brings to mind the best of Gil Evans, with a palette that extends the comparison even further". Macchia, who composed and produced this project, is featured on saxophones, flutes, clarinets, ethnic winds and synthesizers.Jazziz Magazine Review March 2005- Frank Macchia's AnimalsEach tune on this release expresses the fundamental nature of aparticular animal. Although this concept sounds like a cute idea for a kids' album, there's nothing childish about the skills and imagination that Frank Macchia brings to Animals. Plug in your headphones, close your eyes, and Macchia has you bouncing with kangaroos, hunting with tigers, and soaring with vultures.Macchia is best known for his film and TV scores, so it's no surprise that Animals is cinematic in scope. Numerous L.A. jazz luminaries lend their talents, including Mark Isham (trumpet), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Billy Childs (piano), Grant Geissman (guitars), and Bruce Fowler (trombone). They help Macchia paint jazz portraits of different species in their habitats. The latter are mostly portrayed by means of woodwinds, synths, and percussion instruments played and overdubbed by the leader. The end product sounds like a cross between ...
