CD Review: External Forces (Independent Records)Tony Hornbackby william BartleyTony Hornback has written, produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered a recording of 13 original songs and two Leonard Cohen covers for his album titled External Forces. On Hornback's original tunes he weaves tales of characters in isolation and contemplation. Their stories are of both internal and external struggle. The emotional content ranges from love and joy to depreciative self-loathing and pain. The theme of the album is self and one's perception of self. The fourth track, "I Am The Wilderness," is a scenic monologue where Hornback sings, "I am a refugee from myself sorting out destiny." Another track expounds on the theme and contemplates one's destiny in such lines as, "there has got to be a reason to be here / Like the leaf on the tree". The album takes a musical turn with the playful melodies of the first of two instrumentals. In "Left of Time," the principal voice is a toy piano. Hornback plunks its melodies along with child-like meter and ease, but in a contemplative key. The second is "Not So Lucky" and seems a bit contrived compared to "Left of Time," with programmed drum fills and out of nowhere guitar riffs that don't have much of a story to tell. One of my favorite tunes on the record was "Smile." The opening piano riff caught my toes tapping immediately and the simple message of "come on everybody smile and have fun" was a perfect chorus. Well trend setters J-Hoe are a self sufficient independent hip hop /funk/pop band out of Adelaide .J Hoe creates music that bounces, with big beats, funky bass lines and delicately sprinkled guitars like Bazil to a bolognaise. With a vocalist once branded the Serpent spittin flows over anything that goes, they create songs about politics, social awareness, music, life and for the sake of and creativity or just for fun. Formed in mid 2001 after Adelaide grunge Skip hoppers Blind Freddy Disbanded, drummer /co vocalist Jason Hoberg and bass player Simon Bartz went on to form what is affectionately known as The J-Hoe Clickas [J-Hoe]. Pigsy [full frontal lobotomy] joined in August 2001 playing guitar and also recording and engineering the first album [self titled]which was released on December 8 2001. After some artistic difference Pigsy and J-hoe went separate ways ,on went the hunt for a new guitarist . Rick Ghion joined J-Hoe in early 2002 again completing the Three piece. J-Hoe continued gigging and promoting the first album Through 2002 and 2003 . One of the albums tracks Diggers Crying became a runner up in the Triple Js unearthed competition, Little Lamb appeared on ABCS Behind The News program and The Joness appeared on a Grind Productions Skateboard video. The band continued gigging extensively including a cameo performance on channel sevens 11 am . Mid 2002 saw the arrival of saxophonist James Cox, Adding an extra element to the bands sound Taking them from mostly hip hop/funk to a more hip hop /funk /jazz kinda sound. J-Hoe continued gigging around South Australia and eventually toured to Melbourne Playing such venues as the Esplanade and Wild Bills Saloon in early 2003. In mid 2003 It was apparent to the band it was time to start on their second release bounce but was not exactly smooth sailing in July vocalist/drummer Jason had a motorcycle accident seriously damaging his hip and fracturing his spine, Jason was no longer able to play drums but was determined to carry on with the new recordings. This time round Simon and Jason took the drivers seat for this recording, After many Days and hours the album was completed in late November 2003. J-Hoe was on the verge of signing a record deal with local record company Greasy Pop when the deal soured leaving J-Hoe to again fend for itself. Out in the big world alone again J-Hoe started receiving its share of airplay including triple js Oz hip hop show, proving this music would stand up to all the adversity the band had injured over its brief career. Early 2004 Guitarist Rick Ghion had decided it was becoming too hard battling the music industry and departed.
