She immersed herself in the worlds of folk, rock, and bluegrass, and began writing music. She played and sang in Berkeley- and San Francisco-based bands Buffalo Roam, Night of the Iguana, and A Rare Thing, but eventually stepped out on her own to create a fitting vehicle for her music.Firstborn captures a subset of songs composed over the last decade, including two instrumentals. Charity's voice is simultaneously angelic and haunting, and her piano playing is both emotional and technical. Popular songs are often associated with the vocalists that made them famous but few artists actually have the distinction of having a "theme" song along the lines of Bob Hope with "Thanks for the Memories." Even fewer can claim to have two theme songs attached to them and Andy Williams is one of those fortunate stars. After "Moon River" became forever linked to Williams, he recorded a holiday song for his first Christmas album that gave him a yuletide hit and theme song. This harmonious movement proved to be the Muse that stirred generations of musicians to paint audible canvases with stinging guitar licks and hauntingly poetic lyrics. Throughout the years, that inspiration has continued to pierce and tug at the creative heart, longing to define a sound that will set apart their musical journey. Along comes The State, a rock band that hails from Columbia, Missouri, who have unearthed a sound of grinding guitars and rousing lyrics that echo the inspirational staples of the past but define a unique and inimitable sound all their own. The State's story begins in January of 2004 where lead singer and guitar player Joe Brown and fellow guitar player Dylan Phelps casually started writing songs together. The two found a common bond in wanting to write significant and meaningful songs with the weight of a raw rock sound. Joe and Dylan had both grown tired of playing unfulfilling shows with bands that weren't going anywhere, so they joined forces and eventually recorded a few songs in Joe's home studio. The slow burn of this conglomeration eventually resulted in a full album of material. Seeing that their musical pairing brought about the fusion of rock and poetic meaning that they were looking for, they took the next step in forming a band and performing their music for the masses. They hired a few musicians and booked a few shows as the worked on their recording project. When the project was completed in July of 2005, Joe and Dylan sought out band mates to form a permanent lineup. Enter in John Mark Hatfield on bass and Dan Bugbee on drums that now complete the 4-piece band. The distinct sound of The State is certainly brought about by the musical vision, but the lyrical presentation of the song cuts deep and permeates to the heart of every listener. Digging deeper on the lyrical level, songs like "Blink" challenge listeners to make the most of the time they have here on earth, for they don't know how long they have. Or "Back To You," which is about complacency in life and how we should live and love more deeply and getting back to the meaningful things in life. Combining poetry with the meat of encouragement and challenge sets The State apart and lifts them to an entirely new level. I learned to play the piano in my father's church at the age of 8. I had a older cousin that introduced me to quartet gospel music. We formed a group called the Supreme Jubilees. We toured with groups like Willie Neal Johnson and the Keynotes and the Mighty Clouds in the 80's. My roots are in the traditional gospel field. My favorite singer is the late Donny Hathaway. I was heavily influenced by such artis and groups an the Hawkins Family, The Winans, Commissioned, Thomas Whitfield, and Milton Brunson the Thompson Community Choir and many more.
