Stay
$14.09 Detroit comprises a six-composition suite commissioned for the 2009 thirtieth anniversary Detroit International Jazz Festival, played in the studio with musicians from composer/arranger Gerald Wilson's Los Angeles home or New York City area. Curiously, there are no Motor City-based players on the disc, but the themes are based in certain locales from the industrial Midwestern City that has fallen on hard economic times but played a pivotal role in the development of Wilson's highly developed skills as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. A quite spirited and energetic music is heard here from the 90-year-old Wilson, whose charm and wit would rival anyone many decades his junior. It's a swinging affair molded in the traditional big-band visage of Count Basie, Ernie Wilkins, or early Quincy Jones, with Wilson's deft touch for embellishing the blues. Players like trumpeter Sean Jones, son/guitarist Anthony Wilson, violinist Yvette Devereaux, the fine pianist Brian O'Rourke, and particularly L.A. ...
| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Stay
$6.29 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.

| | Brian Bromberg It Is What It Is CD (2009)
Stay
$14.29 Brian Bromberg's fourth recording for the Artistry label, and first since they were acquired by the Mack Avenue label, is a fairly predictable program of contemporary jazz, commercial funk, and pop song covers, as well as uptown New York City R&B-type dance tunes that should appeal to the urban crowd. His prominent electric bass guitar always has a retro feel going back to Ralphe Armstrong, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, and James Jamerson, but retains a current-day feel that is still relevant, remaining skilled and precise as any bassist currently playing the amplified instrument. Many of these tracks include a horn section featuring Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, Gerald Albright, and Rick Braun, while keyboardists George Duke, Patrice Rushen, and Jeff Lorber join in here and there. While entertaining and even attractive from a melodic standpoint, Bromberg and his mates are reworking themes, beats, and songs without pushing the envelope, and make sure that the music is concise and constrained, and never boils over. The hippest selection is the ...
| | Marc Copland Night Whispers New York Trio Recordings: Volume 3 CD (2009) (Import) Germany
Stay
$16.39 From Erroll Garner to Cecil Taylor to Bill Evans, and from Chick Corea to Thelonious Monk, a wide variety of acoustic jazz pianists have thrived in the time-honored piano trio setting (piano, bass, and drums) over the years. It's a setting that has never gone out of style in jazz, and it's a setting that has served acoustic pianist Marc Copland well in his New York Trio Recordings series. The lineup has varied from one volume to the next; on New York Trio Recordings, Vol. 3: Night Whispers, Copland is joined by bassist Drew Gress and drummer Bill Stewart (whereas he was joined by bassist Gary Peacock and Stewart ...

Stay
$18.99 "Half A World Away"Volume 2When trying to decide on a title for our second recording, I pulled all of the resources, meanings and inspirations together from this recording to give us our Volume 2 title, Half A World Away. The first reference refers to our friends and colleagues in Australia. I have been very fortunate and privileged for the opportunity to have traveled to Australia to vacation and perform with the New Wolverine Jazz Orchestra, and other musicians in and around Sydney. That was an experience that was a dream come true for me, and also an opportunity to perform with some of Australia's top jazz musicians. The second reference refers to the song entitled Half A World Away. This was written for Crystal and I, from David Basden in Australia, for our first dance as husband and wife on our wedding day in May of 2004. The last reference refers to the music of the 1920's. Does anyone ever stop to realize that this music was written over 80 years ago, and even though those days may seem like they are "half a world away" that it's still as strong today, if not stronger than it was the first day it debuted? The orchestra recorded all the tracks for this recording at the Capitol Theatre in Davenport, Iowa, in February of 2005. The Capitol Theatre was built as a silent movie house back in the 1920's, so needless to say, my orchestra was a perfect match for performing live on stage for this recording. There is very minimal studio work that has been put into this album, so what you are hearing throughout this album is how we actually sounded the two evenings we recorded. This album follows up our very successful debut recording entitled A Tribute to Jean Goldkette and His Orchestra, with some more Jean Goldkette transcriptions from Frank Van Nus, plus some more Bix Beiderbecke and Ben Pollack recorded arrangements. We have also added three solo piano compositions written by Jean Goldkette that haven't been heard for over 70 years. I particularly on this album would like to feature the orchestra and the members included within the group. Without their efforts, abilities and musicianship, I wouldn't have a group to perform this wonderful music with today. They are all amazing musicians and individuals, and it's ...
