I first met Phyl Fraser at a monastery on the edge of California's Mojave Desert when I was just 22. She was 56 -- or 53 (much to Phyl's dismay, I always got that wrong). It was a friendship made in heaven -- well, heaven adjacent. That Summer, while visiting Phyl at her London flat, she played me a vinyl record of five songs she'd written and had recorded 20 years earlier. As we listened to the scratchy, hiss-and-pop laden recording, Phyl told me how she'd never really been satisfied by the 60s Pop arrangements, but that, sadly, this single well-worn record, along with an envelope of smudged and faded lead sheets, was all that remained of a time in her life when she was a songwriter. I made a cassette of the record and photocopies of the lead sheets, and headed off to explore the Continent for the rest of the Summer. And so the years go by...In late 2004/early 2005, as a surprise for Phyl's 74th Birthday (I finally did figure out the age thing), I went into the studio with my tireless Musical Director and Arranger, David Snyder, and some very talented session musicians, and recorded these five songs what my friend Phyl wrote. One CD went to her on her birthday. The other 999 are for you folks! | | Norah Jones Fall CD (2009)
Familiar Stranger CD music
$14.54 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in ...

| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Familiar Stranger songs
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant ...
| | The Very Best Of Enya CDs (2009) With DVD
Familiar Stranger album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's ...

Familiar Stranger album
$9.35 The Treats are a dynamic rock & roll trio who formed in 2000, shortly after brothers/songwriters Andrew and Don Isham moved next door to bass player Tim Payne. After enduring several weeks of his new neighbors' late night bassless jams, Tim had heard enough. So one night he staggered over next-door, bass in hand, and the Treats were born. The Treats sound is driven by Andrew's vocal melodies and raw guitar combined with the limber rhythm swing of drummer Don and bassist Tim. The Madison, WI trio's music draws heavily from traditional rock & roll and pop, as well as incorporating ...

Familiar Stranger CD music
$11.39 Wim Wenders, the German Filmmaker had one thing to say about Robby's solo CD "Soultube": "beautiful". An award winning songwriter, Robby has written music for the 2004 Oscar nominated short film by Katja Esson, has shared the Stage with Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, Suzanne Vega, Los Lobos, Jonathan Edwards and CCR.
