This is the previous incarnation of the band LEMON SUN"Colour mix elements of rock, punk, soul, pop, and psychedelic from the past five decades. Their CD is entitled Tales From the Enchanted Sea. Their up-tempo, edgy rock tunes are well crafted and surprisingly catchy without being too "in your face." I had the pleasure of seeing these guys rock out in the basement of a Ramada Inn in Hollywood. They were literally bouncing off the walls with energy! I haven't seen an indie band I liked this much in a long time. Colour is Rob Kolar, Chris Knight, Eddie Mosqueda, and Chris Nuccio. You can tell from first listen that these guys pour their hearts into what they do. The musicianship and production on "The Enchanted Sea" is far better than most indie releases I've heard. The first song is called "Three Words." It is a raw, upbeat tune that will have your head bouncing and your foot tapping and the drumming on this track is some of my favorite on the disc. The second song is called "Through These Doors." It starts off with a beautiful, guitar-drenched intro reminiscent of early Sunny Day Real Estate (now called The Fire Theft) and then breaks into a cool groove for the verse. There are also some nice backing vocals in this one. The mood that is created within each of the songs is by far the band's finest element. Next up is "Lust is in Love," a tight song with a catchy chorus. This one starts off really mellow and then explodes into the hook of the song, the guitars complementing each other to the fullest and the drumming and bass always right on. There is a sweet breakdown in the middle of this song that will give you a chance to catch your breath. The fourth track, "Song to Raise the Dead," is a little different from the rest, but has all of the essentials that make this band listener friendly. My favorite on the disc has to be the last song, "Caroline Black." Although this song is mellower than the rest, fear not, it really gets going throughout the course of about four minutes. Kolar's vocals are exceptionally strong and the melodies he writes will have you singing along in just a few listens. The chorus of "Caroline Black" is the catchiest on the disc. "Oh, Caroline." Simply beautiful. This band reminds me a little of indie-rock gods Sebadoh, speckled with some great Beatle-esque melodies. They are bursting at the seams with energy, like of the Clash. A must have for any lover of rock music. This CD is certainly worth the money I paid for it at the show. I can't wait to hear more! $14.79 For the band's second album, Seattle's Evangeline has added a touch more Midwestern grit and rock & roll kick to its honest and open country-rock sound, and 2003's Big Choice manages to improve on one of the more impressive alt-country debuts of the past few years. While the band doesn't exactly bash it out on Big Choice (and it hardly seems in the group's nature to do so), "Little World" and "Tupelo" boast a few shades more guitar-driven fire than Evangeline delivered on Felt Like Home, and songwriter and sometimes vocalist Chris Cline's tales of regular guy angst and romantic frustration suggest a marriage of Paul Westerberg's eloquent gripe and the Jayhawks' sweetly lovelorn contemplation of the plains. Cline is also lucky to have a vocalist as good as Jennifer Potter on board to interpret his material; with a voice that sounds rich but silky and sweet at the same time, Potter is a simply wonderful singer, and her performances here show flashes of the grace and gravity Emmylou Harris displayed on her early sides. And though Evangeline isn't much for showboating, that's also one of the strengths of Big Choice -- the musicians give this material a strong, concise delivery that's clean, realistic, and satisfying, and Cline and Kevin Suggs are both top-shelf pickers when they step into the spotlight. No jokes, no irony, just ten great songs played with heart, soul, and clarity -- Big Choice makes it clear that Evangeline isn't just another act with potential -- it's a band with talent and vision that knows how to make its music work in the studio, and has made a lovely album that's well worth your attention. ~ Mark Deming
While lots of fans and critics have been looking for the great new voice of the alt-county scene in Chicago, Austin or St.Louis, folks in Seattle, Washington can tell you the group in question is alive and well in their own backyard -- Evangeline, a five piece band with heart, soul, great songs, superb vocals, and strong, confidentmusicianship. Playing country-accented rock ...
