| | Crazy Mary She Comes In Waves CD Crazy Mary Discography of CDs
Crazy Mary's She Comes in Waves is a little bit trippy and a little bit hippie. In this assortment of post-new wave atmospheric music, tied together by solid grooves and inventive songwriting, New York City's Crazy Mary emanates the aura of a local, unpolished band playing to an audience of five at the neighborhood tavern. You know, the way the Next Big Thing sounds before the rest of the world discovers how great they are? The songs here fall mainly in the pop/rock-crunchy guitar-post-punk category with a melodic range that goes from mellow and pastoral ("Paris [1944]," "Consider," "A Little Faith") to percussion heavy pop-punk ("She Comes in Waves") and back to basic blues-rock ("Shot by Bullets"). The meandering moodiness captured on "City's on Fire" exhibits that rare mix of posturing and true substance. Crazy Mary's easy guitars, edgy turns, and mellow vocalizations create a first-rate musical attraction of sonorous rendering and quiet rhythms, reasonably enjoyable in an off-kilter sort of way. ~ Roxanne Blanford
Crazy Mary's Second Release, "She Comes In Waves" includes the addition of vocalist Sophia Jackson to the previous foursome. Her voice rounds out a sound described by Ralph White in the New York Press as "Hip and crazy get down on your Knees voodoo dancing. Here comes the band that puts the twang back in your steps."This psychedelically tinted album takes you on a metaphorical trip. From the opening track "Burned", one begins the trip by hurling through space, landing in the beautiful world of "Cancer on the Photograph" a ballad tinted with "carnivals of mescaline". From there the album goes through some rockers, the Keith Richards inspired "Shot by Bullets" and title track "She Comes in Waves" with unbelievable Beach Boys like harmony and driving bassline. As you are settling into the trip, two ballads follow including the Velvet Underground-like "Consider" featuring Sophia's beautiful voice. From there, the trip picks up speed again with psychedelic rocker "No Resistance". Next the trip takes a darker more urban turn with songs "Shock Me", "Calendar Green" and "City's on Fire". Finally when coming down from the trip, the listener is soothed with ballads "Talking to Wendy" about Peter Pan and "A Little Faith"All in all, "She Comes in Waves" tries to capture the feeling of classic albums of the 60's and 70's with exceptional writing and songs that don't all sound the same. She Comes In Waves CD music
$11.15 "The voice is one-of-a-kind and the overall sound is as beautiful as music gets." - Maureen Keller, Indie-Music.comnew york singer-songwriter kate evans released her new solo album, "release," in january 2001. evans, 29, is a juilliard-trained veteran performer who began playing professionally as a classical flutist when she was in high school. she studied jazz performance at rutgers university and became involved in many local bands including the popular avant-garde world music big band all gods' children, a project she was involved with from 1989-1996. in 1995, evans began performing her original songs with her own band, isoe. isoe's 1996 sophomore release, "manhattan lullaby," found its way onto the charts of dozens of regional college radio stations, and was highly praised by critics. robert makin of the gannett courier-news and the aquarian named evans "best female artist" and "best songwriter" in his ninth annual independent music awards, and named "manhattan lullaby" album of the year. isoe's music eluded categorization, but drew comparisons to that of suzanne vega, ani difranco, sade, lisa stansfield, and tori amos. evans's music is also significantly influenced by artists including randy newman, paul simon, aretha franklin, tom waits, and abbey lincoln. evans, originally from manhattan, kansas, grew up surrounded by music. her mother, a professional organist, allowed kate to sit in church balconies and listen to her play instead of sending her to much-dreaded sunday school. her father, a recreational bluegrass musician and radio dj, exposed her to a whole different spectrum-ray charles, randy newman, paul simon, bessie smith, the beatles, stevie wonder, aretha franklin, robert johnson. today, many of these influences are evident in evans's music, along with jazz and folk flavors.-------------Read this great review from Indie-Music.com:"Kate Evans has had her fair share of musical training. She grew up with gospel and bluegrass music in Manhattan, Kansas and attended Juilliard and Rutgers. Her voice is gentle, but has some power behind it - reminiscent of Paula Cole, ...
