| | Skip Heller Bear Flag CD Skip Heller Discography of CDs
Guitarist Skip Heller performs eight of his quirky but straight-ahead originals on this trio date with Duke Ellington's "Angelica." He teams up with Joe Bagg, one of the top organists in the Los Angeles area, and drummer Ryan Doyle for a full set of fresh material. Although none of the songs are destined to become standards, they are colorful. Hinted at along the way are such influences as country music, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Louis Armstrong, the Sons of the Pioneers, Thelonious Monk, and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," plus there is a tribute to the late organist Shirley Scott. A fine effort. ~ Scott Yanow
"Heller injects this music with joy and intelligence, making the listening experience a bit like witnessing genius by lightening strike, fast and furious and allowing for revelation in future listening." (All About Jazz).Skip Heller's first CD of original music in three -- count 'em, three -- years find him in the company of organ genius Joe Bagg and upstart drummer Ryan Doyle. This is Pan-American Jazz: Be-bop meets spaghetti western twang, film noir, rhythm'n'blues, and more with traditional roots organ combo music. Heller's new compositions are something truly special, too, giving the soloists maximum space to stretch out while challenging them.An all-new Skip Heller album is always cause for music freaks to celebrate, but the one-two punch of BEAR FLAG and the live-in-Philly OUT OF TIME are a party unto themselves.Fans of organ jazz have been discovering Skip Heller for the lasy few years and he's become a cult hero via blistering live shows and critical kudos. BEAR FLAG is a perfect introduction to this singular talent.JazzTimes (p.115) - "'Highway 99' pays homage to California guitar, combining some solid solos with a tremolo melody that evokes the ventures or Link Wray." $14.79 I analogize life with baseball. It was exciting and also scary to be eighteen and starting out in the major leagues of the band business, with the Tommy Dorsey band under the direction of Warren Covington. That was the "Tea For Two Cha Cha" band and if it wasn't enough for a young kid to be traveling in fast company like that, add the allure of a hit record. And the whole experience was unbelievable! My guardian angel knew that I was in over my head, though, and sent me Mary Johnston. Mary, a singer in her own right, was traveling with her husband, Lloyd, who was the lead alto player and manager of the band. She sat down next to me on the bus one night and explained that her agent, John O'Connor, also represented Johnny Long's band, which needed a trombonist right away. Warren Covington gave his blessings to leave adding that I was welcome back on the band anytime. I took him up on that offer later on when he needed a trombone player for a weekend gig.Besides Warren's Dorsey band, I occupied bus seats with a variety of bands, including Tony Pastor, Les and Larry Elgart, The Lee Castle Jimmy Dorsey band, and Woody Herman.I became a charter member of Clark Terry's Big Bad Band, which was a co-venture that he led with altoist Phil Woods, and trombonist Melba Liston. That band was a collection of all-stars including guys like Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Gene Quill, Randy Brecker, Jimmy Owens, Ron Carter, Grady Tate.you get the idea!Later I split for Europe, winding up in the Netherlands, and wasn't seen or heard from again for seven years. I married a Dutch lady who just happened to be a recording producer for The Philips-Fonogram Company. Our first co-production was a son who we named Yasha. After that I ultimately became a part of the recording scene ...

Bear Flag
$14.79 Larry Crowley’s musical roots began in his living room in Maine, rehearsing with his father’s country bands. When he landed his first professional gig, he was only 9 years old. Standing on a milk crate, he belted out “Folsom Prison Blues”. Before Crowley got out of highschool he formed a band that over the years would know no boundaries. Larry and his band would make their way into the top spot in 3 states, and share the stage with The Outlaws and Chubby Checker. It was then that he was first called Larry “Rock-n-Roll” Crowley. It would not be the last. Yes, Larry "Rock-n-Roll" Crowley would find himself playing guitar for Jimmie Rodgers (Honeycomb, Kisses Sweeter Than Wine)a number one song on all charts. Then as bandleader for country music’s “21st Century Marty Robbins," Royal Wade Kimes, he shared a lot of big stages with the likes of Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, Deana Carter, The Bellamy Brothers, and Ted Nugent. Being able to span both worlds of country and rock gives you the idea this cat is capable of doing anything, and do it well. You can also find Larry’s distinctive rhythms behind Garth Brooks and Danny Davis on selected Royal Wade Kimes CDs. He’s even made an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry stage with gospel legends Legacy Five. The second ...
