In jazz, instrumentalists have always been dominant -- for every King Pleasure, Ella Fitzgerald, or Betty Carter who came along, there were at least ten or more instrumentalists. But in rock, it's just the opposite. Instrumentalists are very much a minority in rock, although their contributions shouldn't be overlooked. Over the years, noteworthy rock instrumentalists have ranged from the surf guitarists of the 1960s to Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Stuart Hamm in the 1980s and 1990s. Like Vai and Satriani, Curtis Fornadley (who only uses his first name professionally) is a guitarist whose specialty is instrumental rock. His debut album, Curtis, contains elements of jazz, blues, and folk, but he isn't a jazz fusion player like Al DiMeola, Scott Henderson, Pat Metheny, or Larry Coryell -- this is definitely a rock-oriented CD. Although Curtis obviously has chops, he doesn't beat listeners over the head with them; the L.A. resident is a storyteller instead of an exhibitionist, and that approach serves him well on instrumentals that range from the aggressively funky "Adrenaline Ruins the Meat" to more introspective pieces like "Truth" and "That We May Pray Without Words." The only song on the album that Curtis didn't write is the Michel Legrand standard "The Summer Knows," which has been embraced by many jazz artists but seldom receives the type of rock treatment that Curtis gives it. Occasionally, Curtis sings; his vocals on "The River" and "I'm Not Going Back Again" (both of which show a bit of a Neil Young influence) are adequate but not remarkable -- Curtis demonstrates that he is more of a musician than a singer on this enjoyable, if imperfect, CD. ~ Alex Henderson Curtis is a native of southern California who has played over the years with several prominent L.A. bands, playing most of the L.A. clubs as well as venues in Arizona, San Diego and Ventura County. Now as a solo artist his focus has been on instrumental music. His self-titled debut CD on IF6Was9 Records was released in 1998. Fifty percent of his profits from the sale of this CD will be donated to Cancer related charities. Currently Curtis is working on his third CD and performing with his band Rob Chismar on drums and Dave Hill on bass. IN HIS OWN WORDS:"I started playing classical guitar at a very young age on an acoustic guitar that my parents picked up in Tijuana before I was born. This souvenir was made of green wood and had nylon string high above the fingerboard. Soon after I started lessons I dropped the guitar, splitting the body of the guitar open. My Dad put it back together with Elmers glue. He refused to buy me a new guitar, or should I say a real guitar, until I proved that I would learn to play. Over the following months I dropped it three more times and three more times he glued it back together. There was a thick line of glue all around the guitar. After two years of playing I got a Les Paul copy for Christmas. To the dismay of my classical teacher, it was time to plug-in."Uncut (p.109) - 5 stars out of 5 - "[T]his album alone is a source of shining wonderment in the firmament of progressive soul." Curtis album
$12.95 Continuing his stroll through pop's backpages, Rod Stewart moves on from "The Great Rock Classics of Our Time" and dives into the SOULBOOK, shorthand for all the great Motown and soul songs that still are in heavy rotation on oldies radio well into the new millennium. Rod doesn't spend much time with the soul and blues singers so influential on him, choosing instead to run through a bunch of ...
| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Curtis CD music
$16.24 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. And even as she's becoming omnipresent, with her songs mingling with those who co-opt her on the radio, she still is slightly skewed, willing to go so far over the top she goes beyond camp, yet still channeling it through songs that are written, not just hooks. The Fame Monster builds upon those strengths exhibited on The Fame, offering a credible expansion of the debut and suggesting she's not just a fleeting pop phenomenon. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Neil Young Harvest Moon Live CD (2009)
Curtis music CDs
$14.44 Unlike previous entries in Neil Young's Archives series, Dreamin' Man Live '92 does not capture a specific gig. Instead, it's a compilation of highlights from the tour he took prior to recording Harvest Moon, as he aired the album's ten songs alone with his guitar (or on one occasion each, his piano and banjo). Although every one of the album's cuts is here, this isn't a strict re-creation of the album, since the songs are sequenced in non-LP order, but that's a minor detail: for most intents and purposes, this is an alternate version of Neil's well-loved but not epochal return to country-rock. Some of the songs do gain a degree of poignancy in this bare-bones setting, which doesn't ...
| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Curtis songs
$8.75 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun with the Phil Spector goodie "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," a song straight out of '60s girl-group heaven. There is even a "Joy To The World" medley mixing the old and the new--the traditional Christmas song and the Three Dog Night hit. And, as usual, her gospel-voiced background singers are out in full force.
There are two ways to enjoy this album. One is to sit back and revel in Mariah Carey's vocal fireworks, and the other is to pour yourself a glass of egg-nog, get cozy by the tree and have yourself a MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Recorded at the Hit Factory, New York.
Producers: Mariah Carey, Loris Holland, Walter Afanasieff.

| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Curtis CD music
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT. The group's loyal fans have remained with them through the '00s and have braved all the difficult but ultimately rewarding efforts that came with it. To them, LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA is the big payoff and an instant classic. For the rest of the world, this is that once a ...

| | Jonathan Coulton Thing A Week Box Set CD (2006)
Curtis CD music
$50.65 Jonathan Coulton is the Contributing Troubadour for Popular Science magazine and the musical director for John Hodgman’s Little Gray Book Lectures. His songs about vengeful nerds, ennui-afflicted clowns, self-loathing giant squids, and devotees of a certain Swedish prefab furniture store are insanely clever without ever being too clever for their own good. They repeatedly lure you into laughing before suddenly breaking your heart. And the sick part is, you keep coming back. Coulton's is the voice of every spooky elementary school kid who could never quite keep his shirt tucked in or shoes tied; every lovelorn mason and mad scientist; every one of us who has ever sat despairingly on the floor, surrounded by parts of an Ikea endtable, weeping over our allen wrenches. For the past year he has been recording and publishing a new song every week as a free podcast called Thing a Week. This rate of output wouldn't be so astonishing if the songs weren't so constently well-written and produced. A few of these songs have become full-fledged internet smashes: his folky cover of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got ...
