| | Walter Savage Soothes The Savage Beast CD Walter Savage Discography of CDs
Walter Savage is another artist from San Francisco's large and active jazz community. A bassist of considerable talent, this album debuts him as a leader. The title of the album is a take-off on William Shakespeare's famous conclusion that "Music soothes the savage breast." Often "breast" is erroneously substituted by "beast" and with the leader's name being Savage, well hence the title. But the music is anything but brutish. There's an assorted play list of compositions by Savage running the gamut from mainstream jazz, such as "Cah La La La La La," the exotic "Thai Forest," and the modern "Morning Bird." It's on this track that Savage displays his considerable virtuosity on bass -- he takes a long solo that, instead of being boring, is riveting. If a Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra were ever to be composed, Savage would be an ideal candidate as the soloist. Humor is not forgotten, with two versions of a swinging "Gotta Use the Bathroom." One is instrumental and one is sung by Savage with a voice somewhere in between Joe Williams and Leon Thomas. One of the prime cuts on the album is Savage's woeful saga of "Timothy James" and his many driving violations bemoaning that the "only ticket he doesn't have is the winning lottery ticket." The title tune features the soulful sax of Bob Johnson who, with trombonist Al Bent, does good work throughout the session. Despite its menacing title and cover, Soothes the Savage Beast is almost an hour of well-written compositions engagingly played by a group of musicians who clearly know what they're doing. Recommended. ~ Dave Nathan
As the son of a Baptist minister, Walter Savage's church duties were many. But the one he enjoyed the most was being the church pianist. Walter became interested in bass, however, after seeing and hearing Paul Chambers perform with Miles Davis. He immediately purchased a bass and began lessons with Leroy Vinegar, Al McKibbon and other bassists in the Los Angeles area. He is known mostly as a jazz bassist, however, Walter has proven himself as singer, pianist, and composer as well. His blues pop, rock and jazz vocals are truly distinctive and compelling. From 1963 to the present, Walter has appeared in the rhythm sections of Tony Scott, Gerald Wilson, Mary Jenkins, Horace Tapscott, Taj Mahal, Gloria Lynn, Sonny Chris and Arthur Blythe, to name a few. Walter has also appeared with Bobby Hutcherson at Hermosa Beach's famed Lighthouse Jazz Club. Since moving to the Bay Area, Walter has worked with the likes of David (Fathead) Newman, John Handy, Pharoah Sanders and Richie Cole, Harold Jones, Donald Bailey and Mary Stallings (jazz cruises)."Soothes the Savage Beast", his debut CD, is a remarkable collection of original compositions that run the gamut of jazz stylings. Tunes from this CD have been featured on KCSM 91.1, San Francisco's premier jazz radio station. Dave Nathan's AMG review reads, "...Savage displays his considerable virtuosity on bass...is riveting..."Soothes the Savage Beast" is almost an hour of well-written compositions engagingly played by a group of musicians who clearly know what they're doing." Walter can be heard on the following recordings: William Marshall, "For My People" Horace Tapscott, "The Giant is Awakened" Elaine Brown, "Seize the Time" Lamonte Johnson, "Sun, Moon and Stars" label Besides working actively as a teacher, Walter also works a full schedule of club, casual and concert performances around the San Francisco Bay Area. Regular venues for this talented artist include Jazz-at-Pearl's in North Beach, Enrico's Sidewalk Cafe, The Black Cat, Yoshi's in Jack London Square, Club Jazz Nouveau in The Cannery and numerous festivals including San Francisco's Fillmore Street Fair, the Union Street Festival and the Vallejo Shoreline Jazz, Art and Wine Festival. Look for his upcoming CD, "Autumn's Witch". Soothes The Savage Beast
$16.45 Krishna Prema das was born as GiamPaolo Tofani in Florence Italy, 1944. At the age of 16 he started playing guitar following the mood of artists of that time (Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, The Shadows etc.)In 1969 after different musical experiences in Italy (including the groups “I Samurai”, “I Califfi” ), he found him self in England playing in various clubs in London. At that time he started getting involved with the Electronic Synths of EMS and working on solo productions. He mastered a way to get great sound out of a simple stereo tape recorder. In 1973 Paolo returned to Italy to join the group named “Area”. During this time he became deeply involved in electronic, jazz, avant-garde, ethnic and classical music with musicians like Stockhausen, Derek Baley, Steve Lacy, Zakir Hussain and many others. His explorative nature brought his life into a radical direction when he became a Vaishnava monk in 1979.This did not stop his desire to go deeper into the understanding of music, but gave inspiration to go deeper into the root meaning of it, and the connections it has to the spiritual side of the human being. His intense research lead him to music of the Raga scales and the design and construction of a unique guitar type instrument call a “Tri-kanta Veena”.A raga is an ancient way of describing different moods in daily activities using different musical scales. The future of the world is very much related to how we can rediscover precise indications of universal order and readjust ourselves to the will of the Supreme Being.“Future Raga’s” is the first approach in trying to combine the best of two cultures. The percussion will take you to the Asian world, but the improvisations, mostly with a Sitar Guitar, will remind the listener of the jazz world coming from the my earlier musical experience the the group “Area”.1. Mid-day raga The mood at mid-day is full of life, as the sun is most potent during mid-day, thus the activities one engages in at mid-day are the strongest. Devotion corresponds to the full mid-day sun, which can dissipate the darkness of illusion.2. Bhakti Bhakti is devotion to the Lord, it is present in all religions and worship. Our activities can be purified by bhakti. Of all types of yoga, Bhakti Yoga is the culmination. By it one can approach the Supreme Lord in the spiritual sky.3. Going to HrisikesaHrisikesa is in ...

Soothes The Savage Beast
$17.05 Liner Notes (Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times)Keyboardist-composer Thomas Barth is one of those rare individuals who actually got to realize his dream in this lifetime. Seven Worlds is proof of that. Consider the long odds:Barth was living in Austria at the time he conceived of this project. As a classically trained pianist from Vienna who had also taken master classes with jazz greats Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul, he was more than up to the task musically. Plus, his understanding of marketing gave him an added tool in making this project happen. With those key factors under control, Barth turned his attention to sidemen. But rather than relying on the hippest players on his home turf, Thomas went after the impossible dream: former Miles Davis sideman Mike Stern on guitar and the former Zawinul Syndicate rhythm section of Mike Baker on drums and Gerald Veasley on bass. Through a combination of naivete and single minded conviction, involving a barrage of faxes and long distance phone calls, Barth was able to land each of these heavyweights for his ...
