Music Mill, Nashville, Tennessee; Bear Creek Studios, Woodenville, Washington in 1986. Originally released on Motown (6158). Includes liner notes by Steven Ivory.
Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston might have gotten more press in 1986 than Lionel Richie, but DANCING ON THE CEILING was every bit as commercially successful as CONTROL and Houston's self-titled debut. Spawning a remarkable five Top 20 singles, including the sprightly title track and the number one ballad "Say You Say Me" (the biggest hit of Richie's entire career), DANCING ON THE CEILING was the capper of Richie's most successful period. (Richie took an extended hiatus from music after this, not releasing a full album of original material for nearly ten years.) Richie's nearest comparison during this period was Phil Collins, who was just as ubiquitous on the airwaves with a similar brand of adult contemporary pop. But where Collins' records now sound dated because of their trendy reverb-heavy production, Richie was a canny producer/arranger in the grand Motown tradition, and so there's a timeless quality to tunes like "Ballerina Girl" that keeps them fresh.
Lionel Richie wasn't necessarily emboldened by the success of Can't Slow Down -- after all, he had experienced huge success since the Commodores -- but there is nevertheless a sense of swagger on its 1986 successor, Dancing on the Ceiling. This isn't entirely a good thing, since it means he indulges in silliness ...
| | Reds Strike The Blues-Tribute To The Redskins CD (2005)
Tangled Blue songs
$5.20 Radical left-wing politics on Top Of The Pops anyone? Fourteen years before Chumbawamba hit the mainstream charts, the Redskins were the first band to bring revolutionary socialism to the dancefloor. Their fusion of 60s soul, rock, pop and punk with an uncompromising political stance raised many peoples' consciousness' during the 80s struggle against the Thatcher government. Few bands have suffered so much critical flak and unfounded abuse as the Redskins. Their opponents came not just from the right but from the left too. The Redskins' politics were not some rock 'n' roll pose; they Really Meant It Man, and many people from all political backgrounds found that unpalatable. It was easy to criticise at the time, but so much of Chris Dean's words have an uncanny resonance of truth and relevance today. The Redskins were slated for disparaging Live Aid; they were proved to be right. They were slated for attacking the Labour Party; well, just look at New Labour's record in office and deny that Chris' predictions about Labour (for Kinnock, read Blair) weren't spot-on. Few bands have backed up their rhetoric with such determined action as the Redskins. Where in the music industry today can you find such commitment and dedication? They meant so much more than so many other bands, and testament to that can be found both in the plethora of benefit gigs to support the miners strike and antiapartheid, and in the eyes and minds of people like myself that they helped to permanently open a little bit further. I would also like to point out that on a personal level, I found Chris Dean one ...

| | Racketeers Exit Hellsville CD (2005)
Tangled Blue CD music
$12.55 BiographyHaving been together for just six months, The Racketeers released their critically acclaimed debut album "By Hook Or By Crook" in spring 1997. Within a few months, the band had brought their fiery brand of roots infused rock 'n' roll all over Ireland, including a few memorable shows at the Budweiser Rhythm 'n' Roots Festival in Galway. The album was also well received overseas as it notched up radio plays in Holland and Hungary.Summer of that year the band took to the road for a seven-week thirty-five-date tour of Sweden, Finland and Holland. Indeed this set the tone for the following year as European tours (Holland, Denmark, etc.) intermingled with Irish dates.April '99 saw the release of a new album, "Long Time Gone," and a festive release, the "Counterfeit Christmas" EP which resulted in a couple of TV appearances. Early in 2004 they released their long awaited third album, "Exit Hellsville," which was recorded by veteran Paul Thomas, best known for his work with Thin Lizzy and early U2.The album has been receiving radio play in Belgium, Holland,Canada, Spain and Ireland."Exit Hellsville" more than adequately showcases 12 new songs from the dexterous pen of founding member Eamonn Dowd. With Brian O'Toole (bass) and Chris Teusner (drums) the band presents a more countrified sound than on previous outings. Best described as Americana or Alternative Country/Rock 'n' Roll the new album has helped The Racketeers make many new friends.Hot Press gave the album a rave review............."A damn fine example of gravel-voiced country rock...these songs are full of unaffected, unrefined humanity, a kind of world-weary, warts 'n' all honesty that's getting rarer in music.... there is something raw and real about The Racketeers ...

Music lovers have responded well." - SF Examiner "...with layered harmonies, a midtempo strut, and clever lyrical turns... it's stunning." - SF Weekly"Will and Surrender is a breath of fresh air, soaring with Gallagher's raspy smooth vocals - a velvet blanket laid over groove jams" - theowlmag.com"Here is a new guy for us all to check out...pure melodic pop heaven - that with an ounce of soul in the mix. Cool for sure..." - Melodic.netIn 2003, Chris (Kiff) Gallagher walked away from an impressive career in business and politics, and sat down to write some music. In less than a year he'd created "Will and Surrender." Though it was his first attempt ...
