Rise Above album
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's ...

Rise Above songs
$11.18 Lou Reed never struck anyone as one of the happiest guys in rock & roll, so some fans were taken aback when his 1984 album New Sensations kicked off with "I Love You, Suzanne," a catchy up-tempo rocker that sounded a lot like a pop tune. After reaffirming his status as one of rock's greatest poets with The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts, what was Reed doing here? Lou was having a great time, and his pleasure was infectious -- New Sensations is a set of straight-ahead rock & roll that ranks with the most purely ...

| | Stephen Clair Altoona Hotel CD (2000)
Rise Above album
$11.39 Stephen Clair grew up in northern NY State. A lot of people don't realize there's a whole state up there. You say NY, and most folks think of a city. But Stephen, he spent his formative years splitting logs for firewood; then he'd put the logs in a wheelbarrow and haul it up to the house where he'd throw the logs down a chute into the basement. After that, he'd go downstairs and stack the logs. Then he'd do it again. This went on for years. The house he grew up in was in the middle of a big field next to a wide creek, which his cousin insisted was a river. Once, Stephen took two 100-ft. extension cords end-to-end out into the field as far as they'd go and plugged in his guitar amplifier. He sat down under a tree and got to work. Eventually he moved to NY - the city, that is - where people buy their firewood at the grocery store. There were a lot of familiar things when he arrived in the city, like the folk scene on this side of Broadway, and the antifolk scene on that side of Broadway. He had been coming to the city for years, always playing on one side of Broadway or the other. Both sides had their merits, their histories. But Stephen played guitar like he might have been hanging out at CBGB in 1975. And he sang like a far away sailor whose boat had run aground in West Texas. He was from neither this side nor that side of Broadway. So, he moved to Brooklyn.Brooklyn had trees and sky going for it. It was newly familiar because it was a city, ...

| | Mike Aiken Getaway CD (2004)
Rise Above songs
$17.09 Barry Graham, WHRV FM music director, Norfolk, VA, says GETAWAY is, "Influenced by music styles from Newfoundland to the Caribbean. Aiken combines folk, country rock and maritime to bring you maritime folk rock at it's best." GETAWAY features 12 cuts plus an acoustic hidden track. Ten of the songs are originals along with Mike's acoustic slide rendition of Gershwin's 'Summertime' and the traditional maritime tune 'Jolly Rovin' Tar'. GETAWAY shines with Mike's technique of subtly mixing different genres to create a unique and highly entertaining style of his own. To record GETAWAY Mike returned to Bay Queen Studios in Norfolk, VA, where his 1st CD, TRAVELIN' BONE, was produced. "With my studio being in a 1941 80' tugboat, it definitely sets the mood for recording the style of music I write. Every note was recorded afloat." Aiken continues, "I was lucky to be able to get just the musicians I wanted. They all picked up on the feeling and laid down some great tracks." Featured musicians include: Bob Zentz on concertina, button accordion and vocals, Mike Markure on bass and vocals, Jeff Armor on drums and percussion, and Amy Aiken on vocals and percussion. "Mike Aiken writes songs for a small planet, songs about the human journey. His latest recording GETAWAY is one of those albums where I find the tunes running through my head even after the CD is over," states Brenda Barkley, Performing Arts Coordinator for Tidewater Friends of Folk Music. From his songwriting and vocals to his varied instrumentation (acoustic, electric, national steel guitars, mandolin and harp), Aiken strives to take you on a musical and lyrical getaway. He does just that on his new CD GETAWAY.REVIEW:"Got my copy of Getaway yesterday, been listening to it and I think it's really good, great production. 'Saltwater Blues' and the cover of 'Summertime' are 2 of my favorites."-Mike Macey, WRNR 103.1 FM Annapolis, MDREVIEW:Saltwater Tunes By Jane MeneelyChesapeake Bay Magazine, March 2004 p. 17Mike Aiken's new CD release offers a slice of the cruising life, with a tantalizing hint of the islands.Norfolk-based singer-songwriter Mike Aiken has sailed from Cape Breton ...
