$17.09 Moira Nelson Harp, Voice, Piano, Classical Guitar, Composition Born in London, England, Moira moved to Toronto as a child and began her musical education with piano lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music and privately with Mona Bates. By the age of twelve she had passed her Grade 10 piano examination and was performing her own compositions at concerts and recitals. Her studies broadened to include harmony, composition, voice and classical guitar. Still in high school, Moira made her professional debut as a pianist with a jazz quartet. A chance encounter during a vacation in England led to extensive appearances in and around London where she worked as a soloist, playing guitar and singing Celtic and traditional music along with her own original songs. Some years ago, Moira began playing the harp, an instrument she had always dreamed of mastering. She is now president of the Toronto Chapter of the ISFHC (International Society of Folk Harpers and Craftsmen) and plays a 36-string "Enchantress" harp, which was custom designed and built for her.An accomplished and versatile artist, Moira's busy schedule includes concert and studio work ...
| | Brilliant Coroners CD (2004)
42 album
$17.09 Certain prejudices may actually invalidate criticism entirely, at least in terms of artists looking for insight into their own accomplishments. Trumpeter and arranger John McDonough's project is a combo playing and sometimes radically reinterpreting the songbook of Thelonious Monk. The name of the group is an amusing pun based on one of Monk's song titles, "Brilliant Corners," instead this is Brilliant Coroners, not to be confused with several other jazz and rock combos named directly after the song in question. Monk would have liked that pun, it can be guessed, just as it can be guessed that he would have been horrified with some of these arrangements, slamming the door to his bedroom the way pianist Joel Forrester describes in one of the biographies of this jazz genius. All of this is at the heart of the prejudicial opinions mentioned at the outset, as a key question no matter what key these tunes are in seems to be what is actually proper behavior for playing a Monk tune? The more personality a composer has, the more unique his vision is, the more these prejudices may come up, criticism admittedly being one of the less destructive bastions of prejudice available on the free market. Some listeners would say rock & roll or funk versions of Monk tunes are a horrible thing, referencing tacky aspects of the culture that the extremely special Monk compositions do not include in their outlook, it as if things like that do not exist. Monk did not need to do The Twist. It is kind of like Alice going down the rabbit hole and finding MTV waiting for her.
Ears prejudiced this way would conclude that the more Brilliant Coroners sounds like an actual Monk recording, the better the group is, particularly pianist Andy Pritikin. McDonough plays some superb solos on trumpet; reaction to saxophonist Jody Espina again is hampered by expectations of what might be called "Monky business" if puns are the order of the day. He is too flowery and demonstrative, as if trying to whip the audience up, when the music is better served by ...

| | Telegram All The World Asleep Tonight CD (2005)
42 music CDs
$15.19 Telegram is one of those bands that you want to keep to yourself. That you listen to like an impossible secret. They are one of those bands that, once you hear them, you take a protective ownership of. Like other groups before them who have made incredible music well beneath the mainstream radar, Telegram cultivates that rare paradox of a band who belongs to a very devoted group of fans that don't want to see them on MTV, but will insist on playing their music for anyone they come in contact with. Fans who will sit across from you on the floor of their apartment, pour you a drink, and make sure that you hear a barely-whispered lyric. Fans who thrive on pointing out a subtle string melody playing off in the background. People who will champion the band fervently to anyone who will listen, but will also make sure that you actually get what you are hearing. That you truly understand how good it is. If you know anything about the band, it is easy to see why fans react to them they way that they do. Vocalist/Guitarist Troy Bieser is the kind of presence you can't help but be drawn into. One part Nick Drake, one part Paul Westerberg, he is the kind of songwriter that seems to read and then telegraph your innermost thoughts to everyone else in the room. Upright Bassist Rob Henson is equally as riveting. Coaxing melodies you've never heard before out of the instrument one moment, moving your entire body with a criminal groove the next, he is absolutely hypnotizing. Drummer Jamie Shepard sits deep in some lunatic pocket, at times playing with maracas, at times playing with only his hands. It's not an understatement to say he can go from chill to brutal in the course of one song. It is truly cathartic. The music is confessional. It is as arresting as it is romantic. Sometimes it conjures a kind of voodoo, I swear. If you see them play their songs Kerosene Girl or Precious Thing you'll know what I mean. It is hearing music in a pure and unapologetic form. It is brash and it is religious: somewhere between starlight lullabies and The Stones' Exile on Main Street. Between Chet Baker and David Bowie. Shakers crepitate over a ringy snare drum, the upright throbs underneath, a guitar peels out ...
