$24.65 For fans of '50s rockabilly and hillbilly music, this is about as exciting as it gets: over 50 live performances from Dallas' Big D Jamboree radio program by a staggering line-up that includes Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Johnny Cash, Ferlin Husky, Warren Smith, Jerry Reed, Ronnie Dawson (as Ronnie Dee), and many, many more. Recorded live in front of an audience in the mid- to late '50s, this collection gives modern listeners a chance to tap into the thrill of what it must have been to witness these classic artists in their heyday. For anyone who wasn't there at the time (which is most of us), the opportunity to hear Sid King & the Five Strings or Hank Locklin live in their prime is a rare treat. With beautiful packaging, extensive notes, and entertaining extras such as a public service announcement by Tennessee Ernie Ford and a Falstaff beer commercial, this is one package that is not to be missed. ~ Greg Adams
"The Big 'D' Jamboree--Live, Volumes 1 & 2," a two-disc collection featuring live recordings by Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, is a fascinating musical snapshot of the intersection between country music and rock 'n' roll in the 1950s.Nashville's Grand Ole Opry was the major leagues of country music, but its organizers--like most adults in the '50s--frowned on the upstart rock 'n' roll. But there was another layer of country music showcases around the nation, one that was more tolerant of young rock performers because the owners saw that the music could lure new fans. Among these minor league operations: the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport, La.; Town Hall Party in Compton; and the Big "D" Jamboree in Dallas. Like the Opry itself, several of these "barn dances" were broadcast over radio and/or television, thus offering invaluable experience and exposure for such future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members as Elvis Presley, Cash, Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Given rock's rebellious image, it's interesting to see how folksy and polite some of these rockers sound on the Big "D" Jamboree appearances. The shrieks in the background when Perkins sings "Blue ...

| | Aubergine 3 In All Things Modulation CD (2003)
Family Reunion CD music
$12.15 This trio from the Washington, D.C., area recorded In All Things Modulation over a 15-month duration. Essentially, the artists put this rather affable brew together amid their daily work schedules. Along with several guest vocalists and a sitarist, this outfit presents a contemporary EFX-laced production that emanates from the old-school ambient electronic arena, in concert with Chauncey Canfield's snazzy Fender Rhodes work. They implement jazz-based grooves, oscillating synth swashes, and breezy dreamscape-like vamps atop danceable rhythms and a series of loose grooves. Moreover, the musicians' keen penchant for instituting melodically memorable themes adds to the congeniality of this outing. The band meshes the sounds and vibes of the '70s synth movement with elements of techno, soul-funk, mainstream jazz, and much more. Nothing revolutionary to say the least, but an entertaining and rather multipurpose effort that strikes a harmonious chord, especially when viewed upon as a whole. ~ Glenn Astarita
