"Let's have a hand for John Lawler, a great guitar player." jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson "I wish all my students could hear John play. He does things that just can't be taught." World renown classical guitarist and columnist for 'Guitar Player Magazine', Benjamin Verdery John Lawler has been performing in and around the Chicago area for over twenty years. His unique instrumental style appeals to musicians and music lovers of all types. In 1989 Lawler was one of only eight guitarists from around the world chosen to perform his original instrumental compositions at the prestigious American Fingerstyle Guitar Festival. This festival has featured performances by such guitarists as Leo Kottke, Chet Atkins and Tuck Andress. Lawler was personally invited by world renown classical guitarist and columnist for Guitar Player Magazine, Benjamin Verdery to perform at Mr. Verdery's master class in Chicago. He has performed with Sonia Dada lead singer Paris Delane and has opened for jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. His debut CD, '1743', combines instrumental and vocal music that describe some very personal journeys that we all go through sooner or later. 'Angel Cafe', features the haunting voice of Chicago Rose as the counterpart to the suffering patron in the song. Lawler's sense of humor shows itself throughout the CD, often during some of the darkest moments. But the joy in such pieces as '80 West', 'Girl on a Bicycle' and 'Wheels' leave you with an, "Everything will be OK." feeling. All tracks on the '1743' CD were written and arranged by John Lawler except, 'Wheels', which was written by Jimmy Torres and arranged for fingerstyle guitar by Muriel Anderson. 'Screen Magazine' writes about Lawler's '1743' CD, in their December 1, 2003 (Volume 24, No. 24) issue:'The sound can be described as jazz, although the mix of folk and R and B combined with the absence of drums brings a boogie feel to the album. 'Lawler uses percussionist Kevin Patrick and five string fretless bassist Mark Beringer on many of the tunes. The overall effect is an intimate sound. At times you feel as if you're being told a well gaurded secret. $12.15 Crooning mariners create ruckus at local bar every Thursday night - By Angela Hill, OAKLAND TRIBUNE, STAFF WRITEROAKLAND - MAKING TIMELY passage into a barnacled waterfront bar, westward from the Embarcadero in Oakland, 'tis there was said to play a raucous band of mostly mariners, and 'twas truth that be told. There be pirates of the croonin persuasion...Yahhr. A couple hundred years too late to be plundering the seven seas, but long before Johnny Depp conquered the deep of our seafaring souls, the men of the Starboard Watch got hooked by the lure of the sea chantey. And it has been nigh on 15 years that this small band in various incarnations has been strummin and singin salty old nautical songs every Thursday night at L.J. Quinn's Lighthouse to a bursting hold of chantey groupies. They've now taken over the Germans too, with a full-ahead pirate party the first Friday of every month at: Speisekammer restaurant in Alameda. (Guests get a free rum drink if they go in full pirate regalia. Yo ho ho and a free drink of rum. )Weathered and wily, a damn tough life of toil and strife or maybe not yet still seeking gold and glory, the men of the Watch give and get a roarin, rippin, rummin good time. 8 p.m., and all was well Thursday when they launched into their musical lore. Six ofem this time, but it can be five or eight, depending on who shows up on a given night. This time a squeezebox player, a banjo man, a bass, a fiddle, a pennywhistle and a backup singer to boot. They acquiesced to a flood of requests, crooning songs about a whaler and many a drunken sailor, or Homeward bound on the Arctic round, rollin down to Old Maui. Not sure if its singing, though, so much as growling and shouting. A raucous Rex Harrison kind of technique. Their skippers a mighty sailin' man. His mates be brave and sure. Are you Skip? a newbie swabbie queried."What's left of 'im," Skip snarled and slurred, sippin a shot o whisky ...

Greg Abate, Who's Next?: A Music Review e-zine, Los Angeles, CA" . . . definitely a complete artist--voice, guitar, writing, and stage presence all blend seamlessly and comfortably."Rocco Colello, Colello Promotions, Tampa, Fl."Lightfoot meets Taylor w/ the smooth vocal delivery of Gene Watson, bravo!" LeAnna Mosely, Music Moonk Music, VirginiaWinner of the American Songwriter Magazine Lyrics Contest July / August 2007 - "Break Some Stones"Drawing on elements of contemporary folk, Americana, bluegrass, country and folk rock, Doug Spears produces a sound that is fresh and new, yet immediately familiar causing one reviewer to call it "retro contemporary, yet neo-traditional." Vivid, lyrical images set to memorable melodies, delivered with a unique guitar style and powered by rich vocals reminiscent of John Denver - that's the pure acoustic music of Doug Spears. Writing and performing for more than 30 years, Doug is a favorite on the festival and listening room circuit throughout Florida and beyond touring wherever the music takes him. He is a regular on the stages of the Will McLean Music Festival, The Gamble Rogers Folk Festival, The Florida Folk Festival and other similar gatherings. In 1997 he garnered the Will McLean award for his song "Banks of the Old St. John's." He has performed alongside some of the highest regarded nationally touring folk artists, including Pierce Pettis, Ellis Paul, Andrew Calhoun, Michael Smith and Jack Williams.A fourth generation Florida native, Doug was born in Leesburg, Florida and his best childhood memories tie back to the farm house his grandfather built just west of Leesburg in the 1920's. He took up the guitar at age 12, learning on an old Gibson J-45 loaned to him by a family friend, and soon began writing his own songs heavily influenced by the wealth of songwriter poets ...
