Reissues can be quite revealing when a band has been around for a decade or more. A reissue might demonstrate that a band's sound has pretty much stayed the same over the years, or it might make the listener say, "You know, this band has done a lot of evolving since this album was recorded." Arch Enemy's debut album, Black Earth (which was recorded in 1996 and reissued in the United States by Regain in 2007), is definitely an example of the latter. Between 1996 and 2007, Arch Enemy experienced some lineup changes, and their approach became increasingly polished along the way. That isn't to say that Black Earth is not well played or short on chops, only that Arch Enemy favored more rawness in the beginning. Arch Enemy's 1996 lineup -- Michael and Christopher Amott on guitar, Johan Liiva on lead vocals and bass, and Daniel Erlandsson on drums -- keeps the slickness to a minimum on bare-knuckles thrash metal/death metal scorchers like "Idolatress," "Transmigration Macabre" and "Fields of Desolation" (all of which show the influence of both Sepultura and Iron Maiden). Black Earth underscores thrash and death metal's debt to punk, but the power metal influence is quite evident as well, and for all their bombast, the tunes on this album are fairly hooky and relatively accessible. Of course, longtime followers of Arch Enemy will debate the merits of their early output versus what came later. Some headbangers prefer the gruff-voiced Liiva over his replacement Angela Gossow; others will counter that Gossow was an improvement over Liiva. At any rate, Black Earth was a promising debut for Arch Enemy and is among the Swedish combo's more consistent and memorable efforts. ~ Alex Henderson

$35.29 Limited Edition comes packaged in a Digi-book. The new Doro album Warrior Soul carries on the spirit of the old Warlock times and adapts in to the current times. Doro would not be Doro if she did not put all of her heart and energy into Warrior Soul. Once again she had to go a long way. It has leaded her from the already familiar Yellohouse Studio in Wupppertal (Germany), the Atom-H-Studios and the cooperation with Chris Lietz and Torsten Sickert to Switzerland where she worked together with Deezl Imhof (Foolpark Studios) and film director Luke Gasser. | | Roy Haynes Trio Featuring Danilo Perez & John Patitucci CD (2000)
Black Earth CD music
$12.35 One listen to these sessions recorded at the approach of Roy Haynes' 75th year and the listener can feel the vibrant spirit and powerful drive that this master of jazz drumming exudes with every stroke of his sticks. The trio, which includes the young piano star Danilo Perez and bass master John Patitucci, is captured here in both studio and live settings with a well-rounded repertoire. It is the presence of Haynes, however that dominates the proceedings, bringing the acquired experience of his lengthy career to the fore on each swinging piece.
Haynes' snap-crackle-pop sets the tone of the music from the opening read of Bud Powell's "Wail." Though he has made other recordings of it, Pat Metheny's "Question And Answer" becomes an epic feature for the drummer on this spirited take. Perez and Patitucci both fare well alongside the elder statesman, showing excellent precision and dexterity on memorable performances of standards like "Dear Old Stockholm" ...

Black Earth songs
$9.39 Before even listening to this newly formed foursome, I found myself excited with anticipation; two veteran sidemen who had stunning solo debuts on Noteworthy Records a few years back, keyboardist Brian Simpson and drummer Michael White, were back in the loop. Adding bassist "Smitty" Smith and guitarist Ron Smith could only make this a soulful, exciting jam, right? And calling the project Rhythm Logic promised a load of funk...no? Well, sorta but not really. Bloated expectations aside, this is a perfectly enjoyable smooth jazz disc, only more smooth and cool than anything overly exciting rhythmically. "Tuesday's Love" features a beautiful Simpson piano melody and a Smith electric guitar solo that becomes increasingly aggressive, but overall the tune is pretty standard middle of the road genre stuff. Ditto the laid back "Full Speed" and the breezy "A Portrait of Passion," which finds Smith playing sweetly on the acoustic--but still with no real jamming intentions. Cover songs are way too easy a maneuver in trying to gain airplay, but sometimes a unique arrangement can spin the familiar in a unique direction. Not so here with overly faithful readings of Donald Fagen's "IGY" (including vocals and horns identical to the original) and Earth, Wind & Fire's "Fantasy" (likewise). This is the kind of disc that pretty much sums up the basics of smooth jazz without much adventure; everything is technically on target, and the melodies are hardly unengaging. But is it too much to ask musicians of this caliber to challenge us or live up to their clever group name? ~ Jonathan Widran

| | A Life Once Lost Great Artist CD (2003)
Black Earth CD music
$12.49 A Life Once Lost's debut album for Deathwish finds the band taking what it presented with its first album on Robotic Empire and installing more double bass drum and thick guitar sound while taking out some of the fast-paced music and instead making the songs more chunky and dense. The vocals are death metal growls, both in a high and low-end range. And yes, there are occasional guitar solos, too. The downside is that ...
