Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not exactly the wise one. From there, Z-Ro, an expert storyteller, wanders from tale to tale, each one delivered with a novelist's touch, on a record which somehow transcends cookie-cutter.

The rapper's best moments are well documented on this lengthy single-disc compilation. Even more amazing is that despite being in rap's upper echelon for two decades, this is Supernatural's debut album. As "Internationally Known" suggests, Supernatural is "the star of the show" here. The opening track also has a definite feel along the lines of 2Pac and B.I.G. as he recounts his global travels. "Work It Out," which features members of Jurassic 5 and Iriscience from Dilated Peoples, has a good groove to it as soulful Motown female harmonies are heard in the loop. The sound quality on "Victory" is rather low, but showcases how impromptu and creative the artist was in "freestyle battles." His first appearance on the radio program Bobbito & Stretch demonstrates the passion Supernatural brought to every track, especially on "A Piece of Hip Hop History, Pt. 1." Here a horn section is added before the rhyme moves into a funky backbeat. The ensuing second part of this track is another highlight, dampened only by the occasional phrase "Ladies and gentlemen, the star of the show." The give and take on "Wake Up LA!" is poorly recorded, but the spirit and verve cannot be denied. It ends in controversy though. The battle between Supernatural and Craig G has a boxing-match atmosphere on the appropriately titled "Clash ...

Limbeck offer up a breezy, rambunctious dose of alt country pop music with Let Me Come Home. Clearly inspired by the likes of Wilco, Big Star, and Tom Petty, just about any of these 13 songs would put a smile on the faces of their jangle pop idols. Frontman Robb MacLean's nasal singing style might not lend itself that favorably to the album's few ballads, but thankfully sun-drenched California country-rock tunes outnumber the slower tracks. MacLean's and Patrick Carrie's harmonies are a fine fit for the upbeat guitars, melodic harmonicas, and punchy drums that paint countless images of happy road trips through the desert.
