On its third full-length, the New England metal band All That Remains alternates melodic, almost emo vocals with guttural metal expostulations, creating a veritable metallic yin and yang on tracks like "Whispers (I Hear You)" and "It Dwells in Me," while its rushing, full-on sonic assault reaches a crescendo on the climactic "The Air That I Breathe." The longer a musical style remains popular, the more bands seem to latch onto its recognizable formula. In the late '90s and early 21st century, the mainstream suddenly decided that heavy metal was back in style again, and welcomed with open arms bands that merged extreme metal (as evidenced by death metal drumming and growled vocal verses), and melodic metal (sweetly sung choruses). And you could say that All That Remains is definitely a supporter of this well-worn style, as evidenced by their third release overall, 2006's The Fall of Ideals (which was produced by a gentleman who is also a champion of the aforementioned sonic approach -- Killswitch Engage's Adam Dutkiewicz). On such tracks as "It Dwells in Me," it turns out that guitarists Mike Martin and Oli Herbert definitely have a thing for Metallica and Iron Maiden, as evidenced by their chug-a-lug riffs, and intricate dual harmony guitar lines and leads. But on tracks such as "Whispers (I Hear Your)," there's just not a lot differentiating All That Remains from the oodles of other metal bands vying for Ozzfest spots circa 2006. ~ Greg PratoCMJ (p.23) - "Every song features a cleanly sung chorus, and singer Philip Labonte belts his parts with equal vigor and venom..." Sweet metal album This is one of the best more modern metal albums I have purchased. Hard hitting guitar riffs mixed with quick drum patterns, melodic choruses and screams on different pitches makes for an all around sweet cd. There is only one song on the whole album I do not like but the rest of the songs are hot and on point. The songs range from softer, more gentle music to ballistic in-you-face rock music. 5 out of 5 stars, no doubt. Submitted by porsucu (Wilmington, DE) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ATR. The HEAVY METAL!! We Stand!! I love All That Remains.
Actually there's a lack of cool METAL, with all those guys playing "noisy guitar riffs" and all those "throwing up grunts"...it's like as if METAL was just a "hard-listening" against the commercial "easy-listening"...
It's good to know some bands like All That Remains keep the scream clean, a little singing and give in for the very best guitar sound ever.
Thank you ATR!!
I owe a lot. Keep it this way!!
"The Fall of Ideals" the next heavy metal classical after "Reign in Blood"!! Submitted by Dînwen (the Clean Heavy Metal and it's not Mainstream) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Best CD by ATR, or by almost anyone I think this is possibly one of the best CD's I have ever heard in my life. Rust in Peace by Megadeth and this are close.
This cd is horribly underrated by certain websites, it's unbelievable just how good this band is. Six is the worst song on the CD, and I still rate it 3 stars. Submitted by stevenp (Montreal, PQ, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
