Nearly three decades after 1977's BAT OUT OF HELL, and 13 years after its sequel, BACK INTO HELL, Meat Loaf unleashed BAT OUT OF HELL III: THE MONSTER IS LOOSE. While the album was reportedly bogged down in legal disputes between the drama-loving rock performer (aka Marvin "Michael" Aday) and songwriter Jim Steinman, the longtime collaborators apparently patched things up in time for its release on Halloween of 2006. Also assisting Meat Loaf on this typically bold and wonderfully bombastic outing are Todd Rundgren (on vocal arrangements only) and producer Desmond Child, along with a slew of guests including Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 (the uncharacteristically heavy title track) and virtuoso hard-rock six-stringer Steve Vai (the fierce "In the Land of the Pig, the Butcher Is King"). This being a BAT OUT OF HELL installment, of course, there's room for a heart-wrenching duet (with newcomer Marion Raven) on "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" (famously recorded by Celine Dion first) and grandiose pop-tinged rock on "Bad for Good," which benefits from the unmistakable guitar riffs of Queen's Brian May. If it seems like a lot stuffed into one album, it is, and that's exactly what makes THE MONSTER IS LOOSE a top-notch Meat Loaf record.
Personnel: Meat Loaf (vocals); Marion Raven (vocals); Corky James, Eric Bazilian, Steve Vai, Brian May, John 5 (guitar); Matt Rollings (piano); Mark Alexander (organ); Kasim Sulton (bass guitar); Victor Indrizzo (drums); Kenny Aronoff (percussion); Desmond Child, Todd Rundgren (background vocals).
Q (p.140) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "THE MONSTER IS LOOSE is overblown, frequently ridiculous and largely devoid of irony....The album works best when the big guy is at his most operatic." some great moments There are some great tracks on this album. The standouts include What About Love, Blind As a Bat, and Alive. If Meat Loaf had performed all the duets with his WAL partner Ms. Russo, the duets would have been much stronger. Their voices have such natural chemistry. Their duet will be a showstopper live. All in all, it's a good production. Submitted by sam (silver springs) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Overblown Broadway soundtrack I listened to it out of curiosity, but I won't listen to it very often any more. It truly sounds like a soundtrack from a Broadway production, NOT a rock'n'roll album. Points for all the collaboration, but including a Celine song??? Submitted by Me (California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Best. Among the 3 Bats, this is the best. I really loved it. Jin, Desmond and Meatloaf did a great job.

Listenable to anyone's ears! I am almost 18 and already understanding why Meat Loaf and many other rock legends are still taking over stadiums around the world! This album has some of the hardest and softest rocking songs i've ever heard and is one my favorite albums in the universe! A must-have! Submitted by sss (sss Waliingford) Was This Review Helpful? $16.45 CORNELIA STREET: THE SONGWRITERS EXCHANGEIt is twenty-nine years since three of us stumbled across a tiny storefront on Cornelia Street in Greenwich Village and thought it the perfect place to open a café. It’s a tiny one-block street but it has a long and interesting history. It was laid out in 1794 on the farm of Robert Herring, who named it for his granddaughter, Cornelia. In the nineteenth century it housed the stables of the rich. During Prohibition it sheltered one of New York’s most famous speakeasies. In the early forties W.H. Auden moved in at Number 7; in the late forties Anatole Broyard opened a bookstore at Number 20; for eleven years into the early fifties James Agee had a writing studio at Number 33; in the late fifties Joe Cino opened a café at Number 31 which became one of the fountainheads of Off Off Broadway.Perhaps it was the street, perhaps it was the fact that all three of us were involved in the arts, but from the very beginning, in one tiny room, we had poetry readings and music performances, and then a little play written for the café, and pretty soon all sorts of things: fiction writers and journalists; and programs of bawdy and Inuit poetry; and puppeteers and flute players and classical guitarists; and a living portrait of James Joyce; and mime shows and dances on the street outside the café; and recorder, oud, and concertina music; and comedians; and shows of paper and air; and fairy tales and storytellers and Punch and Judy shows. And on Monday nights beginning in December of our first year and every Monday night ...
