In 2006, with little advance word, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke unveiled his first solo album, THE ERASER, much to the surprise of many of the band's fans. Given that Yorke is the literal voice of the beloved British rock ensemble, these nine songs, produced by Nigel Godrich, don't depart too much from Radiohead's moody, electronica-tinged sound (i.e. KID A, AMNESIAC, HAIL TO THE THIEF), but they do prove to be more intimate, sometimes recalling the hauntingly spare "Rabbit in Your Headlights," Yorke's collaboration with DJ Shadow on U.N.K.L.E.'s PSYENCE FICTION. Like that tune, much of THE ERASER is awash in somber piano lines and minimal beats, as on the dreamy opening title track, while "The Clock" runs on skittering, tightly wound loops. Though there are up-tempo moments on the record, the overall atmosphere is melancholy and sometimes flat-out ominous, qualities that are hand-in-glove with Yorke's achingly plaintive voice and often bleak lyrics. Enhanced by the beautifully illustrated artwork of Stanley Donwood, THE ERASER isn't just music for a rainy day, it's the perfect counterpoint to a thunderstorm.

Arrangers: Thom Yorke; Nigel Godrich.

Personnel: Thom Yorke; Jonny Greenwood (piano); Nigel Godrich.

Audio Mixer: Nigel Godrich.

Rolling Stone (p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Yorke's voice has never sounded so fragile; his melodies have never sounded so mournful....Something different, something we haven't heard before."
Rolling Stone (p.107) - Ranked #34 in Rolling Stone's "The Top 50 Albums Of 2006" -- "The sound recalls KID A's quiet glitch-tronic moments, in disarmingly straight-forward verse-chorus-verse tunes."
Spin (p.75) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his is his most personal, confessional work. Call it a blog with beats -- low on guitars and high on abstract expressive moodiness."
Spin (p.58) - Ranked #28 in Spin's "The 40 Best Albums of 2006" -- "THE ERASER pulls off a neat trick, making the dour almost danceable and weighty weirdness not only palatable, but impossible to turn away from."
Entertainment Weekly (p.78) - "[T]he overall mood is austere and claustrophobic....THE ERASER cultivated uneasiness with snaky melodies..." -- Grade: B-
Q (p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Yorke is in fine, soulful voice...relishing its sound as much as his words. THE ERASER has him firing on all cylinders."
Q (p.125) - Ranked #17 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006" -- "THE ERASER was a low-key, unassertive, largely electronic reminder of Yorke's winning way with song textures..."
CMJ (p.4) - "He's crammed the album with swirling pianos, sampled drums and even his own voice as a chordal backing instrument....It sounds remarkable."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "THE ERASER showcases Yorke's ability to shape-change in all its peerlessness....THE ERASER plots a new course for becalmed electronica..."

4 stars For any fan of "Kid A" or "Amnesiac"
There is obviously quite a debate among fans of Radiohead. Are you a pre-"Kid A" or post-"Kid A" Radiohead fan. Any band that lasts evolves over time. I'm sure that with Radiohead the evolution will continue. "The Eraser" will appeal to many Radiohead fans but clearly it is a continuation of the electronic/melancholia that began to appear on "OK Computer" and reached fruition with "Kid A" and "Amnesiac." [and "Hail To The Thief" to a slightly lesser degree...] IMHO Thom Yorke has the best voice in contemporary music and it certainly shines here. Thom Yorke has produced a first class solo effort. I'm certainly looking forward to Radiohead's new album and to whatever path they choose to blaze next...

5 stars progression
if you are a radiohead fan, this album will definitely appeal to you. thom yorke presents the progression of his production and songwriting in more of an experimental electronic style. in earlier radiohead albums, yorke hinted at what this album would offer. now it's here for your listening pleasure....and it is definitely that - aural pleasure.

5 stars Great Album Art, Great Album
Thom Yorke is one whom, I would've never thought that I would ever buy an album for. Given that Radiohead, amongst the long list of albums and billboard hits that I have come acrossed, all but 2 songs have really sparked my interest. The Eraser blew all of my past falsities of the group away.....with such electronica singles as track 7 & 8 combined......will EASILY inspire any fan of great music,no matter what genre and generation to search at great lengths to discover......The Eraser. There's definitely a trademark sound that continues the traditional Radiohead branding........yet more soulful, and personal; with nice melodies and classic content. CLASSIC

Arcade Fire Funeral CD  (2004)

Eraser album
CD $12.05  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness. Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem culled from some enigmatic, ...

Sufjan Stevens Illinois CD  (2005)

Eraser CD music
CD $12.19  4.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven. Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, the album also showcases Stevens's heartland folk, and some of the album's most shimmering moments are its most spare. "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.," for instance, is an absorbing narrative that features Stevens's sweet tenor couched by guitar, piano, and backing vocals. "Casimir Pulaski Day," similarly, rides a rootsy banjo and guitar groove while Stevens unfurls image-rich lyrics over a lilting melody. Witty, audacious, and moving, ILLINOIS manages to be spiritual, entertaining, and educational all at ...

On its 2006 album, RETURN TO COOKIE MOUNTAIN, the Brooklyn-based post-punk group TV on the Radio manages that rare feat of becoming more adventurous and accessible at the same time. While this record isn't a major departure from its eclectic predecessor (the lauded DESPERATE YOUTH, BLOODY THIRSTY BABES), it is notably more cohesive, and even boasts a guest appearance by David Bowie, ...

Arcade Fire Neon Bible CD  (2007)

Almost three years after the Arcade Fire's 2004 full-length debut, FUNERAL, stunned indie-rock fans with its majestic scope and romantic ferocity, the Montreal-based ensemble returned with NEON BIBLE. Although the album lacks the from-out-of-nowhere punch of the former record, it serves as a fitting successor, with the group's sweeping sound enhanced by even more prominent layers of piano, organ, strings, and percussion. As on FUNERAL, married multi-instrumentalists Win Butler and Regine Chassagne share vocal duties, and their distinctive singing adds to the emotional weight of each song, from the urgent, bass-heavy "Keep the Car Running" to the brooding, cinematic "Black Waves/Bad Vibrations." And while the Arcade Fire's post-punk influences are still on display, they are more fully integrated into the band's ambitious aesthetic, as best evidenced on the lush, nearly operatic update of "No Cars Go," which originally appeared on its '03 EP. With its cathedral-like grandeur kept in check by the group's restless energy, NEON BIBLE features both slowly revealed charms and immediate thrills, easily ...

Initially issued in October 2007 with little prior notice, Radiohead's seventh full-length studio outing, IN RAINBOWS, took not only fans but the entire music industry by surprise. Released for a limited time only as an online download, the album was offered by the revered British rock group in a groundbreaking "pay what you want" format, allowing the listener to decide its digital value before an appearance in conventional CD form a few months later. Innovative business practices aside, IN RAINBOWS also garnered attention as Radiohead's most immediately engaging offering since its BENDS/OK COMPUTER days, returning to slightly more accessible pop/rock song structures, while never abandoning the ...

Israel is likely the last place one would look for pop-punk exports. But when the punk rock dust settles, quality always shines through. So when Useless I.D. earned a spot on the entire 2002 Warped Tour, the choice between that and a summer spent in their war-torn homeland was a no-brainer.Heavily influenced by So-Cal pop-punk, Useless I.D.'s second Kung Fu album "No Vacation from the World" shows the band's willingness to try some new things (occasional moog keyboards, moodier melodies, brighter harmonies) while not forgetting its deeply-planted punk roots. While traveling on Warped, the band collaborated with No Use for a Name front man Tony Sly on their new songs, with Sly even contributing a full number ...

"Somewhere between Alanis Morisette's anger...and Tori Amos's ethereal weirdness lies Bonnie Hayes" -Indianapolis Star News"One of the Bay Area's best voices, and arguably its finest songwriter" - SF Chronicle"Intriguing, delightful..." -Billboard"Smarter, surer and more sisterly than any rock and roll woman I can think of..." -Robert Christgau, Village VoiceThe songs of Bonnie Hayes have always been extraordinary, from "Shelly's Boyfriend", the post-punk badgirl anthem that put her on the map to the authentic passion of "Have A Heart" and "Love Letter," which restored Bonnie Raitt to superstardom with the multi-platinum, multi-Grammy-winning CD Nick of Time. Writing for artists as diverse as Bette Midler, Robert Cray, Adam Ant, David Crosby, Booker T and the MG's, and Cher, Hayes has continued to craft songs one critic described as "sparkling clockwork mechanisms with a tendency to do the unexpected."On the new CD, Love In the Ruins, Bonnie infuses her barbed lyrics with her own unmistakable vocal style and adds a new fervor for crunchy guitars and incendiary drumming. The sum is ironic, literary, melodic, tragic, wild, honest, joyful music that also flat out ROCKS. Known for years as a keyboardist ...

Morning In Paris
Sathima Bea Benjamin Morning In Paris CD  (1963)

Eraser album
CD $13.85  Audio Samples
In 1963, singer Sathima Bea Benjamin persuaded Duke Ellington to see her future husband, Abdullah Ibrahim (then known as Dollar Brand), play in a club in Europe. Ellington was impressed by both of the recent South African émigrés and arranged with Reprise to record them. While Brand's record came out within a year, Benjamin's debut was lost and not heard for decades, even by the singer. As it turned out, engineer Gerhard Lehner had made a second copy and kept it for all of these years, so the initial 1997 release of this important session was possible. Backed by pianist Ibrahim, bassist Johnny Gertze, drummer Makaya Ntshoko, and (on two songs apiece) Duke Ellington or Billy Strayhorn, and occasionally joined by violinist Svend Asmussen (who here plays exclusively pizzicato, as if he were using a high-pitched guitar), Benjamin's voice sounds quite beautiful. She performs two Ellington tunes, Strayhorn's "Your Love Has Faded," and nine standards, with the emphasis on slow ballads. The moody music is often haunting and ...
