Eke Out album
$11.45 Of all British rock's least enviable exports, the national predilection for faceless pop stars -- light of ideas, big on gimmicks, and short of substance -- has always baffled Anglophiles, even as the Anglos themselves send them rocketing chartwards. In the mid-'70s, Tina Charles was certainly the reigning queen of such creations, a sub-disco pop diva who, though she never dented a chart stateside, took six singles into her native Top 30. This, her 1976 debut album, was titled for the positively enormous number one hit that launched that sequence. Pure period disco, with soaring strings, chukka-chukka guitar, and all the right bells and whistles, it must be confessed that it has some charm. Unfortunately, Charles herself doesn't have much of a voice, singing straight from the throat and sounding painfully strangled. It can't have felt good. "I Love to Love" is her album, if not her entire career's, ...

Eke Out CD music
$25.85 Issued in 2008, MOMENTS. presents the veteran Belgian techno act Front 242 performing live. Given the band's mechanistic inclinations, the tracks on this set often sound like studio recordings, as evinced on the ominous "Until Death" (from 1988's FRONT BY FRONT) and the pulsing "Take One," a single dating back to the early `80s.
Seeing as how analog synthesizers started making a comeback in 2006/2007 after years of digital and laptop dominance had wiped them off the scene, the veteran Belgian industrial group Front 242 decided to re-load their early analog material into their new gear and head out on the road for what they called the "Worldwide Vintage Tour." All sounds were "carefully re-designed" to "match the spirit of their time" and while the band and their loyal fan base clog Internet message boards with discussions on how everything here is "re-invented," Moments... isn't much more than a live album with the usual updates. The good news is that it's a thoroughly exciting live album where classics like "U-Men," "Body to Body," and "Headhunter" sound louder, punchier, and more aggressive than they ever have before. The original recordings remain definitive as they are more complex and textured, but longtime fans ...
| | Kathy Kosins Mood Swings CD (2002)
Eke Out music CDs
$14.49 These days, jazz often functions as repertory music; there are plenty of faceless, totally predictable "Young Lions" (both instrumentalists and singers) who insist on doing the same old George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter standards the same old way. But Kathy Kosins, to her credit, doesn't inundate listeners with beaten-to-death warhorses on Mood Swings. A jazz vocalist with R&B and pop influences, Kosins co-wrote seven of the 11 songs on this CD -- and her writing is decent on material that ranges from the languorous "Paradise" to the swinging "No Ordinary Joe." The only song on Mood Swings that jazz singers have beaten to death over the years is Don Redman's "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You"; the other non-originals that Kosins successfully interprets range from Jackie Gleason's "Melancholy Serenade" (which was the theme from the '50s sitcom The Honeymooners) to Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." The latter is arguably Mood Swings' most imaginative offering; while Hendrix's original 1967 version of "Foxy Lady" was an early example of heavy metal/hard rock, Kosins demonstrates that the gem can also work well as dusky vocal jazz. To some myopic jazz snobs, a rock classic like "Foxy Lady" is something to be avoided. But Gil Evans didn't feel that way, and Kosins obviously doesn't either. Again, Kosins is a jazz singer with R&B and pop influences. Parts of Mood Swings are straight-ahead jazz, and parts of it favor more of a crossover/quiet ...

| | Andy Summers Green Chimneys: The Music Of Thelonious Monk. CD (1999) Bonus Tracks; Germany; Remastered
Eke Out songs
$14.35 Since his days with The Police, guitarist Andy Summers has investigated various avenues of jazz with his own quirky slant. With GREEN CHIMNEYS, he gets to explore Thelonious Monk, one of the most original composers in jazz and one of Summers' greatest influences. This most ambitious project finds Summers in good company, with support from such jazz aces as Peter Erskine, Joey de Francesco, and Dave Carpenter. In a way, Monk is a logical choice for Summers, as the two share similar eccentricities in music. The guitarist's unique wail fits the offbeat melodies of Monk to a T.
Summers sticks to the standard Monk repertoire, offering fresh re-workings of classics like the bouncing title track and "Hackensack," the latter featuring a New Orleans street-beat from Erskine. "Bemsha Swing" oozes along, with Summers doubling on both electric and acoustic guitars. The most raucous track is the grinding "Shuffle Boil," a heavy slammer featuring trumpeter Walt Fowler. The highest point, however, comes with the beautiful "'Round Midnight," on which Summers is ...
