| wonderful alternative to 'big band' Mahler
the chamber version has been recorded more than once. vanska did it on BIS (a pretty sorry effort). there have been many good performances in Mahler's scoring. what i notice in all these is some strain by the soloists to match the orchestra (even given the multi-mic setups of the major recording companies). none of that here. everything in balance. one of Herreweghe's better efforts, aided no doubt by the incomparable Musique Oblique and excellent sonics by Harmonia Mundi. now on musique d'abord, it is a steal.
