Composer: Hans Zimmer. Composer: Nick Glennie-Smith. Recording information: Air Lyndhurst Studios, London, Abbey Road Studios, Lond; Sony Pictures Scoring Stage, Culver City, CA; Todd AO Scoring Stage, Los Angeles, CA. For the second PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film, director Gore Verbinski breaks out the big guns, both visually and sonically, bolstering the adventure movie's sound with a bold orchestral score by veteran composer Hans Zimmer. The opening track, "Jack Sparrow," captures the essence of the dynamic character (given a gleeful eccentricity on screen by Johnny Depp), moving from a lighthearted intro to vibrant string passages that evoke Sparrow's swashbuckling side, while "The Kraken" revels in a deeply ominous atmosphere. The album closes, oddly enough, with a propulsive techno remix of "He's a Pirate" by renowned electronica artist Tiesto. The always dependable Hans Zimmer took the wheel from Klaus Badelt on 2006's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the sequel to Disney's surprise blockbuster smash Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The Curse of the Black Pearl score was a mishmash of several composers, and its weaknesses were derived from the resulting lack of focus. While there is little that positions the Dead Man's Chest score anywhere near the esteemed Spielberg-esque mantle that it strives for, Zimmer adds much-needed zest and characterization to the franchise. "Jack Sparrow," a cello-led waltz that perfectly encapsulates Johnny Depp's cartoonish antihero, finally gives the character the musicality it needs, and the occasional burst of Celtic folk brings a warmth and whimsicality to the series that was sorely needed the first time around. Zimmer, who brings his usual blend of percussion-heavy keyboard orchestration to the action sequences, could do this in his sleep, but it's the kind of mediocrity that dispels negativity. Lastly, the embarrassing "He's a Pirate [Tiësto Remix]" sounds like an outtake from a Project Runway/Zoolander "pirate week." ~ James Christopher Monger Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Soundtrack Music Hans Zimmer Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Soundtrack Songs Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Soundtrack Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) SOOOOO cool, SAVY ONLY WITH ONE V!!! this is a very good soundtrack that shows how he corallates the music to the actors lines and movement. Even if you hated the movie... Even if you were one of the few who hated the movie, you can't deny how fantastic the score is. The score itself tells the entire story from start to finish with the same fantastic quality one has come to expect from Hans Zimmer. A must have for any Pirates, or for any movie score, fan! Truly Amazing! Savvy? The film itself is a mix of wonderful, talented and truly honourable acting, costume and make up artists, directing and music. However, on listening to the sound track it is clear to see what makes a film like Pirates of the Caribbean a mark in the history of films. With its' distinctive use of poignant instruments which you can listen to, in order to sooth one or to simply remember the talent and wit of the one and only Jack Sparrow. Truly amazing, worth a purchase! Submitted by missus_lampard (england) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
