Closed Captioned; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles Over the course of her career as a writer and filmmaker, Catherine Breillat (ROMANCE, FAT GIRL) has never shied away from controversial topics, using both mediums to explore her strong feminist opinions. Joining a generation of similarly taboo-breaking French directors such as Francois Ozon and Gaspar Noé, Breillat has no problem displaying explicit material to her audience and forcing them to confront their own assumptions about the relations between men and women.
In ANATOMY OF HELL, based on her own novel, she presents a largely allegorical scenario positing that all men are inherently fearful of female sexuality. A gay man (ex-porn star Rocco Siffredi) prevents a woman (former Chanel and Gaultier model Amira Casar) from killing herself in a nightclub. Thrown together by this fated moment, she offers to pay him to watch her in the most intimate way--leading to a confrontational exploration of male and female psychology and misogyny. Never one to back down from the controversial, Catherine Breillat's explicit film ANATOMY OF HELL is perhaps the work that gets closest to her theoretical preoccupations. Anatomy Of Hell Reviews: "[P]erhaps her most unflinching look at the implicit assumptions and expectations we live by."

Anatomy Of Hell Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) A definate No The most descriptive manner to review Anatomy of Hell is to ask the question "Did the movie achieve its objectives?"
To answer that question as honestly as i can, the answer would be a definate "No". This movie does not achieve the substance that "Romance" achieved. The scene with the "Tampon" and the "Rake being inserted" is totally unnecessary. I sincerely believe that the an alternative approach could have been used to bring across the same message (if any!)
So my concluding remarks "Buy this movie if you have money to waste" Submitted by preston.moodley (Johannesburg South Africa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A movie that left me thinking, had to give it five stars. Anatomy of Hell- I don’t know why I rented it, but I did, and I am pretty homophobic, so I did not know what to expect. I did not think I would like it. I knew Rocco Siffredi as a European XXX rated star, so did not think it go much deeper that that. The character played by Rocco (No names were used by the key actors.) is a gay man hanging around a gay club. A women played by Amira Casar. Amita’s character interacts with to get him to observe her in her most intimate (female) moments. (I won’t go into detail for those who have not seen the movie.) Some question were left as to why things happened the way they did, and why Rocco’s character became her target.
Basically a very human female character (seemingly weak) takes (pays) a very antithetical gay Rocco and causes him to re-think why he is like he is, and his dislike of women. In director Breillat’s words "it is the meeting of the first man and the first woman." The interaction is very graphic and explicit at times- but I could not turn away from it. I have added it to my collection.
“Director Catherine Breillat explores female sexuality and men’s darkest fears about women’s sexual power.” French with English subtitles- A movie that left me thinking, I had to give it five stars! –Brilliant!

pushing the limits one of the most explicit, raw and cool films of the year. beautiful and ugly at the same time. astonishing scenes. not for conservative or antiquated-mind people. buy it!!!!!!!!!! It's OK Good film, but Breillat's "Romance" is better. This one have really shocking scenes with a rake (auch!), a lipstick and that one with the tampax challenges the limits between art and dirt. Casar and Siffredi's performances are right. The big problems: pretentious dialogues talking in the name of women, long useless silent scenes and this movie is not so explicit as I thought. EXPLICIT, EXTREME, EXCELLENT GOOD AMBIENT, GREAT ACTORS, MINIMAL DIALOGUES, EXCELLENT TOPIC, BEAUTIFUL SUB-TEXTS... A NEW VIEW ABOUT WOMAN'S MIND AND BODY USING THE EYES OF A GAY GUY TO DO IT (SIFFREDI'S PERFORMANCE IS AWESOME). TERRIFIC ART PIECE ABOUT EXTREMES AND INSANITY. REALLY EXPLICIT, BUT INTELLIGENT. MISS BREILLAT RULES!!!!! BUY IT. Submitted by FRANCESCA (SANTIAGO, CHILE) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$16.99 From his current post in Antarctica, British glaciologist Matt (Kieran O'Brien), recalls how he met Lisa (Margo Stilley), a 21-year-old American student. They were at a rock concert at London's Brixton Academy, and he took her back to his apartment for sex. This began a brief relationship, which is revealed as Matt remembers and comments on its milestones--mainly the other concerts they attended and their significant sexual experiences--before their initial sexual attraction waned and they were forced to part.
The titular nine songs are comprised of concert performances by 1) Primal Scream, 2) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, 3) Elbow, 4) Michael Nyman, 5) Super Furry Animals, 6) The Dandy Warhols, 7) Von Bondies, 8) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club again, and 9) Franz Ferdinand. Shot on often-blurry, handheld digital video from an audience perspective, these scenes have a you-are-there effect. The sequences involving Matt and Lisa are intimate and realistic (be warned--the sex in the film is real and graphic), conveying everything one needs to know about their relationship with only the most rudimentary dialogue. With this brief, dreamlike work, director Michael Winterbottom (24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE) has theoretically created the ultimate music movie--one that is purely sex, drugs, and rock & roll. The result is akin to the feeling of listening to a great mix tape made by a former lover.
Matt, a young glaciologist, soars across the vast, silent, icebound immensities of the South Pole as he recalls his love affair with Lisa. ...
