| | Steve Earle Definitive Collection CD Steve Earle Discography of CDs
Even before he became a controversial, polarizing figure in the early 2000s with such stark and politically-charged songs as the terrorism-themed "John Walker's Blues," Steve Earle was too rough-edged and too ornery to fit neatly into any Nashville box. The outstanding 18-track anthology THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION gathers the highlights of Earle's early career, from 1986's country-rock stomper "Guitar Town" to 1997's sardonic "Christmas In Washington." Though Earle's lyrical themes and melodic style are as country as Hank Williams (clearly his biggest influence), he's also a disciple of the Rolling Stones ("Dead Flowers" gets a respectfully raucous cover) and Gram Parsons-era Flying Burrito Brothers. With the Dukes, Earle offered a gritty update on Parsons's "cosmic American music," which gave the staid Nashville scene of the '80s a shot in the arm and helped pave the way for the punkier alt-country movement of the '90s. Earle's personal demons prevented him from becoming a country superstar in his early days, but THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION features some of the most powerful country music of its time.

Definitive Collection album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background ...

Lyrically, Weigle continues to tell engaging stories that explore gay life experience, from the sexy, morning-after romp, "A Good Day", (Billboard Magazine's 'Unsigned Record of the Year')to the title track, told from the perspective of an elderly gay man who's just lost his lover of many years, who finally finds the courage to tell the truth in order to honor their relationship. "John" is a poignant look at a married man's first experience with another man, set in an adult bookstore ...

| | Caroline Herring Wellspring CD (2003)
Definitive Collection CD music
$8.79 Simultaneously gruff and intimate, Caroline Herring's second album, Wellspring, offers 11 tracks of Southwestern acoustic folk-based country with appropriate focus on her obvious songwriting talent and her equally powerful voice. Like her soulful country contemporaries (Kim Richey, Shelby Lynne, Patty Griffin), Herring's breathy sensuality punctuates her themes of love, loss, and heartache, and her understated vocals, while never over-reaching, often swell and break under the strain of the song's own emotion. The leadoff track, "Trace," sets the pace for the entire record, and Kelly Willis unobtrusively lends her vocal talents to the album's highlight, "Jewels." The inclusion of the parlor blues number "Texas Two Step" is a little incongruous amid the rest of the straight-ahead folk songs, but ultimately proves the versatility that Herring is capable of. ~ Zac Johnson
Caroline Herring's music can best be described as "Southern". Blending the sounds of country, folk and bluegrass with the unmistakable spiritual influence of the blues and gospel, Caroline's two Blue Corn albums reflect her Mississippi upbringing and her subsequent academic journey into Southern culture. More importantly, they showcase an extraordinary singer/songwriter whose poetic lyrics are matched by her melodic gifts and the sort of vocal talent that comes along all too infrequently."Twilight", Caroline's ...
