| | Charlie Palmieri Vuelve El Gigante CD Charlie Palmieri Discography of CDs
Vuelve el Gigante is subject to speculation about Alegre's intentions (payback for years of support work, riding brother Eddie Palmieri's coattails, or a serious attempt to promote older brother Charlie). In any case the album presents incredible star power and opportunity. There are compositions by Arsenio Rodriguez (the eight-minute "El Guaya Catalina"), Chico O'Farrill, Raoul Morrero, and others. Arrangers include Tito Puente; and Joe Cain was at the helm. What it comes down to, however, is the players and Charlie Palmieri. "The Giant" really should be Eddie, and Charlie is more like Jack clambering up the beanstalk and borrowing the true giant's band. Not all of the personnel is the same, of course, and Charlie certainly was entitled! And the result is wonderful, at least for one album. Charlie's more traditional, romantic, even nostalgic music is brought out, caressed and maximized by the band's effortless, modern, laid-back sound. It is like a very solidly built chair that is also plush and comfortable. Vuelve el Gigante may not be a giant of an album, but it is not one to overlook, either. ~ Tony Wilds

$12.35 Bachata was originally rural and guitar-backed, above all bolero-type songs. It began moving to town a few years back, and has reached the bigtime with this big-deal production. The basics (guitar ensemble, simple percussion, sentimental lyrics, rural associations) have gotten kind of generalized, but ...

Vuelve El Gigante music CDs
$7.59 Three years after her Grammy-winning Voz d'Amor, Cape Verdean superstar Césaria Évora returned with her tenth album, Rogamar. Recorded in Mindelo, Sao Vicente, Évora's hometown, and Paris (Caetano Veloso arranger Jacques Morelenbaum added the strings in Rio de Janeiro), Rogamar is a lovely piece of work, with most of the 15 tracks written for her by her talented Cape Verdean songwriting team. The songs, as evidenced by the title of the album (which translates to "pray to the sea"), speak of love, loss, island life, and humankind within the context of the ocean. Water is the recurrent theme; it is present constantly, and is something to which life can be compared: it takes and it brings, it is love and it is separation, it is a friend and it is death. Adding to this is Évora's voice, which constantly alludes to the sea, and can be quick and choppy, or long and smooth, but mostly is clear and fluid and is what controls the album and gives it life. Yes, the instrumentation is wonderful and contributes greatly to the songs (although sometimes Morelenbaum's strings are a little too much, nearly overpowering the rest of the band), accenting ...

$16.45 Steve "The Harp" Mehlberg - Vocals, harmonica, keyboards, songwriter. Band Leader of Steve "The Harp" Blues BandA native son of Bloomington, Illinois, Steve has been blowing harp around Central Illinois area since 1972. Steve is a Master Harmonica Instructor with over 30 years experience. Steve "The Harp" is a veteran and a retired Normal Fire Department Lieutenant.Steve "The Harp" Play Hohner Harmonica's, Astatic microphones & Fender Amps. Influences: Howlin Wolf, Little Walter, Paul Butterfield, James Cotton, Rice Miller, Gary Smith, Rick Estrin, Big Walter, Al Wilson & Charlie Musselwhite. Label - Bluesman RecordsBack In The Blues Album ReviewSteve 'The Harp' Blues BandBy Randy HoffmanFor the Blues Blowtorch SocietyWhat we have here folks, is proof that the Blues is kickin' hard in Central Illinois. Nobody, let me make that a little clearer, NOBODY plays the blues any better than the Steve 'The Harp' Blues Band. Every aspect of the music is Blues and every part of it is right on target. 'Back in the Blues' is the opening tune, written by Steve Mehlberg and it is a great start to a fine cd. Although the opener is the only original tune, each of these songs is possibly the BEST recording of it I've heard. Musically, each one stands on its own merit and as a whole, the cd has great dynamics, changes of pace and is a pleasure to listen to again. I have to tell you that I have been given seven cd's in the past year that featured harmonica players. Without fail, by the time the cd was over I was tired of listening to harp being blown at the maximum velocity. This cd has been in my car player for the past 800 miles in two weeks. It demonstrates that harmonica is a musical instrument to be melded into great blues, not slam all over it. Steve's vocals throughout are very cool; demonstrating range, control and very expressive tone. If you are from Central Illinois, you already know that Steve is the finest, most versatile harmonica player around. Now, I think we can say anywhere. When Steve started playing keyboard a couple years ago, a lot of people said 'WHY? He's a fantastic harp player, why ...
