Comedian Brian Posehn is a self-described metal nerd, who on this set of cutting-edge standup takes his fetish to the extreme of populating his own band, Posehn (geddit?), with legends like Anthrax's Scott Ian, Fates Warning's Joey Vera, and White Zombie drummer John Tempesta, on a self-penned metal tribute, "Metal By Numbers." Posehn, a veteran of the groundbreaking cable TV show MR. SHOW WITH BOB AND DAVE, is a shockingly funny comic, who, with his dry, off-the-cuff delivery and his routines' often scatological content, elicits both jaw-dropping incredulity and paroxysms of laughter, often in the same bit. | | Patton Oswalt Feelin' Kinda Patton CD (2004)
Live In: Nerd Rage CD music
$12.15 "America is like a giant retarded trust fund kid"; "I was late to an ether frolic"; "Angie Dickinson could suck..." well, that last line's better left for Patton Oswalt himself to finish. Let's back up. An acerbically funny standup and underrated comedic actor, Oswalt finally gets his own album with Feelin' Kinda Patton, and there's a good chance Wal-Mart isn't stocking it. Speaking too quickly for your kidneys to process the laugh pain, Oswalt puts a pincer through the strata of American society, skewering everyone from the President and his curious motives, to decadent Hollywood producer Robert Evans, to gumpy Midwestern Fashion Bug workers naïvely laying '80s pop/soap opera discard Michael Damian behind the Tilt-A-Whirl. "That's the one thing I like about George Bush," he says in "Come On Apocalypse." "I really think he can get us into the Apocalypse." But while the Prez definitely raises Oswalt's hackles, ...
| | Dark Tranquillity Character CD (2005)
Live In: Nerd Rage music CDs
$11.45 Having taken longer than most of Gothenburg, Sweden's death metal giants to reveal their greatness, Dark Tranquility have now arguably become that ever-popular subgenre's most enduring torch-bearers -- the living embodiment of melodic death metal midway through the '00s. And, in keeping with that station, 2005's Character marks the third installment of what most agree has been the band's most consistent career-phase; one which finds them, like other genre standard-bearers before them (Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, anyone?), reveling in their mastery of a formula they know so well it inevitably begs the question: have they become too comfortable in their niche? Are they stagnating? Well, there's a distinct difference between beating a dead horse and riding it to victory every time, and ...
| | John Zorn Filmworks XV: Protocols Of Zion CD (2005)
Live In: Nerd Rage songs
$13.39 The 15th volume in John Zorn's Film Works series is the soundtrack to director Marc Levin's Protocols of Zion, a documentary about anti-Semitism in the wake of 9/11. Unlike some of the other volumes in this series, Zorn performs here -- on electric pianos, with master percussionist Cyro Baptista and bassist and oud player Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz. In his liner notes, Zorn speaks of somewhat formal compositional procedures in relating to the images on the screen. The end result, however, is anything but. The music found here unfolds in a set of elliptical yet very accessible grooves. One can hear traces of various folk music forms from Hasidic cantorials to Yiddish songs to pop and soul-jazz forms winding their way through this engaging and often hypnotic mix. One can hear trace of Joe Zawinul's early Weather Report improvising in the phraseology of the title track as it engages sacred song. On "Mystery ...
| | Buried Inside Chronoclast CD (2005)
Live In: Nerd Rage album
$10.45 Progressive rock and hardcore are two styles that no one involved in their original inception probably ever expected to see merge; and yet Canada's Buried Inside take part in an ever growing legion of bands (Mastodon, Isis, Pelican, Pushing Up Daisies, to name but a few) doing just that. Taking their basic cues from all of the above and, naturally, the daddies of it all, Neurosis, Buried Inside have concocted a single, uninterrupted 40-minute piece of music for their third album, 2005's Chronoclast. Consumed with ...
