Rocking a killer Joan Jett shag and the most prominent cleavage of any female guitarist since the heyday of Lita Ford's solo career, Canadian pop-metal heroine Britt Black (former lead guitarist for the Lilith Fair's gothy cousin Bif Naked) starts her solo career with the proudly retro Blackout. Those former Runaways are clearly among Black's main influences, along with Pat Benatar, fellow Canucks Loverboy, and a generation's worth of poodle-haired rockers both male and female. These 13 songs are crisp riff-rockers without a shred of substance beyond their inherent catchiness, with fist-in-the-air choruses and the occasional flashy guitar solo. Although it seems vaguely weird to be reviewing a new album in 2006 that would have been a perfect fit on MTV's Headbanger's Ball in 1987, this kind of semi-metallic, semi-punk rock & roll never truly goes out of style, and the best songs here (specifically "Sick & Tired" and "Good Girls") will bring out the spandex-clad bandana rocker in anyone. ~ Stewart Mason Britt Black Blackout Songs | 1. | Baby Come on Back |

| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Blackout
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Blackout
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the ...
| | Ray LaMontagne Trouble CD (2004)
Blackout
$9.69 Every once in a while a singer/songwriter comes down the pike in the grand emotive tradition of Neil Young and Van Morrison. In the early 2000s, the quietly intense folk of Iron & Wine and the rootsy-experimental stylings of Sufjan Stevens continued that lineage. Ray LaMontagne, whose impressive 2004 debut, TROUBLE, draws on alt-country, ...

Blackout
$21.65 Completing Captain Oi's admirable recounting of the Boys' career, Punk Rock Rarities is a 22-track roundup of studio rarities recorded between 1977-1980, picking up a handful of previously unanthologized single mixes ("I Don't Care," "Terminal Love," and "Kamikaze"), but most notable for the inclusion of the band's unreleased third album, Junk. That set, scheduled for release on the NEMS label in early 1979, was abandoned when the group switched to Safari and embarked instead upon the tortured journey that resulted in the To Hell With the Boys album, which itself underwent considerable revision before finally seeing the light of day. Junk, on the other hand, remained on the shelf for the next 20 years and, dispassionately, one must confess that the band made the correct decision. To Hell With the Boys, after all, was a ...
| | K's Choice 10: 1993-2003 Ten Years Of CD (2004) Import
Blackout
$10.49 The albums of K's Choice haven't always been perfect, but they have generally been enjoyable -- and whether lead singer Sarah Bettens has favored the hard, gutsy rocker-chick bravado of Shirley Manson (Garbage), Chrissie Hynde (the Pretenders), and Christina Amphlett (the Divinyls) or the more introspective singer/songwriter aesthetic of the Indigo Girls, Aimee Mann, and Sarah McLachlan, this Belgian outfit has often brought an attractive sense of melody to the table. Both sides of K's Choice -- the rocking side and the adult alternative/folk-rock side -- are nicely represented on this best-of collection, which was assembled in 2004 and looks back on the group's 1993-2003 output. 10: 1993-2003 offers many of the essential tracks from that ten-year period, including "The Ballad of Leo and Paul" from 1993's The Great Subconscious Club, "If You're Not Scared" from 1998's Cocoon Crash, and "Not an Addict" and "Mr. Freeze" from 1995's ...
