Like Merge labelmates the Arcade Fire, White Whale aims for a widescreen sonic grandeur on its 2006 debut, WWI. Featuring singer/guitarist Matt Suggs (formerly of Butterglory) and bassist Rob Pope (ex-Get Up Kids), the Kansas-based band offers up moody indie-rock tunes with a nautical undercurrent as best evidenced on the urgent, propulsive "What's an Ocean For?" and "The Admiral," a spare, quirky ballad that builds to a chanted furor.
Audio Mixer: Ed Rose.
Recording information: Rob's Basement, Lawrence, KS (2005); The Black Lodge Recording Studios, Eudora, KS (2005).Alternative Press (p.216) - "Too big for the shallows, White Whale are at their best when pushing out into the depths of dense melodies and sea-breezy lyrics." Magnet (p.112) - "[F]airly golden and never uninteresting....White Whale is worlds more sophisticated than Butterglory..." $12.69 The Silver Jews returned after a four-year absence with 2005's TANGLEWOOD NUMBERS, one of the band's most accomplished and satisfying sets. The Jews' over-hyped status as "a Pavement side-project" (the band contains Pavement members Steve Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich) and an "all-star group" (Will Oldham, Dave Pajo, and the Jesus Lizard's Duane Denison are also involved) is dubious at best. What's more accurate is ...

$10.69 "Are they black?" --Iggy Pop. Formed in 2004 and hailing from the mescaline-infused outskirts of Austin, Texas, this gang of misfits has been on the road non-stop since their birth, performing at such venues as Sin-e, The Empty Bottle, and Spaceland. In early 2006, the band's self-titled debut EP was dubbed highly recommended in Spin Magazine, and received heavy radio airplay on such influential stations as KEXP and BBC Radio 1 by Zane Lowe. In January 2006, the EP stood tall at #28 on the CMJ 200, a rare feat for a four-song introductory EP. This year will see the band spread their lysergic wings across the globe, perfoming live throughout North America, the UK, Europe, and Australia. The Black Angels reach high and stretch out over the ten songs on their introductory album "Passover" with trance-inducing guitar lines from Christian Bland, Nate Ryan's filthy medical dumpster bass, additonal four and six string work from Kyle Ryan, and the grizzly preacher vox of lead shaman Alex Maas. Fifth track "Black Grease" is a bluesy monster full of swagger propelled by primitive beats of drummer Stephanie Bailey and nouring drone of organist ...

$11.39 The Rising Sun club in Toronto is the setting for this live 1977 set. Hooker is joined by a band of bass, drums, and second guitar. The foursome stretches out to provide lengthy versions of such Hooker classics as "One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer" and "Boom Boom" along with four other blues standards. In the '70s, Hooker was halfway between his early days as a boogie pioneer and iconoclastic primitive and his subsequent elevation in the '90s to bona fide blues legend-with the attendant major-label deal and all-star guest appearances by disciples like Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton.
On THE RISING SUN COLLECTION, Hooker's voice is front and center. And, if his rightly celebrated grooves are at times a little overshadowed by guitarist John Garcia's post-'60s wailing, ...
