(1 Customer Review)
Aligned with legitimized Chicago conscious hip-hop imprint All Natural, Inc., the trio of KP the Ilustrado, StrikeIII, and Norman Rockwell team up with Illmind to drop the seven-song EP, THE CASE. Smooth, steady flows are complemented by sophisticated, left-field production--clean but busy, with percolating bass lines and a horn section that verges on Latin lounge. | | People Under The Stairs O.S.T. CD (2002)
Case
$13.45 It's hard not to appreciate what People Under the Stairs are trying to accomplish with their third full-length. Fortunately, the attempt (i.e., the finished product) works just as well in practice as in theory. Although there could be a little more variety from track to track, this is one fun and funky record. There's a democratic, stylistic purity to O.S.T. -- hence the title -- that is wholly consistent with its predecessors. As Thes One explains in the liner notes, it's "an album that is made up of old records and personal experiences" -- no more, no less. Both One and Double K serve as MCs and DJs and think of themselves more as B-boys than artists or musicians. They eschew live instrumentation (with the exception of the bass on "The Breakdown") and rely instead on their distinctive, loose-limbed raps; deep, diverse record collections; and mad turntable skills. Consequently, the Los Angeles duo has been compared more often to the underground hip-hop combos of the 1980s and 1990s, like the Pharcyde and Freestyle Fellowship, than to their contemporaries of the 2000s. The best example of their no-frills approach comes to fruition on the horn-blasted party anthem "Hang Loose," a cross between Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and Poor Righteous Teachers (and in ...
| | Little Brother Listening CD (2003)
Case
$15.05 In Little Brother's music, the North Carolina group makes a specific point to highlight the more refined aspects of mid-'90s hip-hop. Basing its 2002 sound upon the foundation previously established by the likes of Pete Rock, A Tribe Called Quest, Jay Dee, and Black Star, Little Brother makes somewhat of a political statement by applying such standards to this modern age. The Listening does an exceptional job of proving that soulful meditations have indeed retained their traditional relevancy within the contemporary realms of rap. 9th Wonder's production leads the charge with distinct drum kicks pacing larger-than-life melodic samples, which are often enhanced with sultry female voice-overs. Meanwhile, Phonte and Big Pooh dig even deeper within the hip-hop vaults as they draw upon classic routines by the likes of Rakim, Slick Rick, and Audio 2 for their lyrical inspiration. Whether engaged in storytelling, braggadocio, ...

| | Atmosphere When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold CDs (2008) Parental Advisory
Case
$16.29 The Minneapolis-based duo and indie rap heroes known as Atmosphere (Slug on the mic, Ant on the beats) is back with their sixth and arguably most daring LP, WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS. As usual, Slug spins compelling verses that range from hopeful and sensitive to aloof and cynical, while Ant elevates his production repertoire to new heights. Working largely in the familiar area of soul, jazz, ...
| | Emc Show CD (2008)
Case
$12.89 Masta Ace recruits a trio of underground MCs responsible for the tightest guestwork on his DISPOSABLE ARTS and A LONG HOT SUMMER to form the supergroup E.M.C. Along with the slick lyricism (a given with this group of artists), THE SHOW comes with a simple enough concept (the crew is traveling out of town to do a show) that moves the record along nicely. This narrative thread allows the four MCs to cleverly dialogue with promoters, critics, fans, and each other, discussing their industry personas, the politics of the business, and the day-to-day trials of hip-hop artists trying to make ends meet. Every track bangs with hot production ...

$16.45 Inspired by many world folk and café musics; meeting as musicians often do, in the center of this beautiful blend, to forge a new expression, with echoes of Eastern European and klezmer styles, Parisian bal musette, American folk, early jazz and swing, even rock.
