| | Astra Weirding CD (2009)
White Line
$10.69 During the late '90s, it seemed like prog rock had finally achieved extinction. But fast forward ten years later and the genre was thriving once more - as evidenced by the arrival of such groups as Astra and their 2009 full-length debut, THE WEIRDING (which includes some very Roger Dean-inspired cover artwork). Hailing from an area not exactly known for spawning prog goliaths (San Diego), THE WEIRDING is not all about fingers flyin' on the fretboard, however, as the group touches upon the spacy sounds of early Pink Floyd and King Crimson on the title track. And this same approach carries over throughout the entire album, as evidenced by such ditties as "Silent Sleep" and "Ouroboros," both of which follow the prog prerequisite of songs that stretch over ten minutes in length (and in ...

$12.95 Dbl.CD;Mainly Instrumental,Mix Of Live & Semi-Live Recordings

Engineers: Tonio Neuhaus, Uli Jon Roth, Georg Feltes. Recorded between September 17 and February 2000. Personnel: Uli Jon Roth (vocals, guitar); Steve Bentley-Klein (violin, viola, cello, trumpet); Don Airey (keyboards); Shane Gaalaas (drums). Audio Mixer: Uli Jon Roth. Recording information: Skylight Manor, Wales (09/17/1999-02/??/2000); Vienna, Austria (09/17/1999-02/??/2000); Zenith, Paris, France (09/17/1999-02/??/2000). Photographer: Uli Jon Roth. Uli Jon Roth was an early member of the Scorpions, and his guitar sound with that band was very revolutionary and inspired. He is also well-known as a longtime devotee of Jimi Hendrix. This double-disc set, coming with that reputation behind it, would be well expected to be a killer. Unfortunately, the music does not live up to the expectations. The majority of the material is very "noodly" and just plain boring. There are exceptions: Roth's cover of hero Jimi's "Voodoo Chile" being the most notable, but really this one is a yawner. ~ Gary Hill Uli Jon Roth was an early member of the Scorpions, and his guitar sound with that band was very revolutionary and inspired. He is also well-known as a long time devotee of Jimi Hendrix. The majority of the material is noodly and about what you'd expect, and there's a great cover of Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile." ~ Gary Hill The artwork and titles here smack of new age schmaltz. However, it is worth it to get past this and indulge in this disc. Roth's technical ability is amazing. In front of a live audience he recreates magnificent orchestra masterpieces on his guitar. While Roth is on exhibition to display his advanced skill, he does not lose the melodic sense inherent in these pieces. Volume ...
