Live:Beyond The Galaxy CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together ...

| | Jeff Evans Prodigal Son Blues CD (2006)
Live:Beyond The Galaxy music CDs
$14.79 'Prodigal Son Blues,' the debut album from Jeff Evans is a collection of worldly, intelligent songs influenced by a love of both literature and American roots music. The Bible, Middle English lyric poetry, Sir Phillip Sidney, T. S. Eliot, Walker Percy, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson are all invoked in an attempt to answer the age old question of how to reconcile the raucousness of Saturday night with the devotion of Sunday morning. In other words, how is it possible to live in two worlds simultaneously? The musical style also reflects this conflict, drawing inspiration from blues, gospel, old time, honky tonk, rockabilly, and even modern alternative country, yet the final product, though, perhaps, not seamless, does attain a unified artistic vision. It is more quilt than blanket, but comfortable and familiar, nonetheless. 'Prodigal Son Blues' is an album in search of a cult following.Jeff Evans is a Birmingham, Alabama based songwriter who quotes lyrics like Baptists quote scripture. He has been a rather obscure member of Birmingham's music scene for more than ten years. Evans was a co-founder of the late, and much lamented, Wynthorn Ramblers, a big, fat honky tonk band who weren't afraid to blur the lines between musical genres. Audiences were as likely to hear Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters covers as Merle Haggard and Hank Williams. ...
| | Bob Marsh Co-Lage CD (1999)
Live:Beyond The Galaxy songs
$12.69 Two little-known musicians with some big ideas collaborate to create some exceptionally exciting tracks. Bob Falesch performs on something called a metaPiano, which sounds very much like an ordinary piano. No matter. His rapid fire style that relies on clumps of sound and frenetic delivery effectively magnifies the keyboards into swirls of energy. Unlike some others in this genre of freestyle jazz, Falesch knows when to tone down the heat, and the superior results are like pin balls on speed, sometimes mitigated by speed bumps. The pianist's partner, Bob Marsh, is equally effective on flute and cello (and occasional voice), and serves as an effective foil. The cello pounces on the pianist's openings, with flits of activity, while the more melodic, though no less subversive, flute glides above the storm. Falesch selectively adds electronics, which intensify the distortions. None of the nine tracks fails to deliver, and this modest, if adventurous, duo should satisfy the most demanding connoisseurs of free improvisation. ~ Steven Loewy
A taut, developmental style, full of counterpoint. The keyboard stylings of Bob Falesch reveal harmonies that owe as much to Alban Berg and Arnold Schoenberg as to Bill Evans or Cecil Taylor (who might be considered a prototype for Falesch's extreme physicality at the keyboard). Bob Marsh - sometimes on flute, sometimes ...
| | Orris Seraphim Circus, Vol. 1 CD (2005)
Live:Beyond The Galaxy album
$8.79 Orris was born out of a genuine desire to create something truly unique and nakedly honest. Orris has fused soundscapes and songs with authenticy through exploration, crafting what would ultimately result in a whole new sound comparable to Coldplay and U2 meet Bright Eyes and Sigur Ros. Building textural soundscapes centered around piano and voice, Orris conjured the sound Music Connection Magazine predicts 'will win fans among anyone looking for music with a soul.'Raised in Twin Peaks and Chicago, Orris is the son of an ordained minister. By the age of four, he was singing and playing piano competitively and in his teen years went on to win a vocal scholarship to the Wheaton Conservatory where he studied voice, piano and composition. During his studies, he ventured outside the traditional curriculum and delved into experimental exploration of sound, as well as a long-suppressed attraction to Eastern forms of meditation and spirituality. Orris' spiritual and creative intentions ...
