The Players BandHalftime (Self-released)Can a reggae/ska band rock? On its third CD, The Players Band proves that it definitely can. An eight-piece, the group makes the most of a muscular horn section (featuring Nick Reider on trumpet, David Blackstone on trombone, and Michael Gorman on saxophone) that, like the Skatalites, punctuates its rock steady tunes with shots of bouncing, upbeat brass. Funky songs such as “Joe’s Song” show it can also cut deep grooves out of Joe Ross’s nimble bass playing, Andy Schneider’s drumming, and Dan Schneider’s chicken-scratch guitar. In fact, Halftime exhibits a near-encyclopedic knowledge of classic soul that mixes nicely with its rocking take on reggae and ska.John Lewis, Baltimore Magazine. January 2006--“Your band freakin’ rocks!” Joe Strummer.--"A rocking big band out of Baltimore and DC, the Players can hit all the styles and are a must-see live!" - AP Magazine (Alternative Press). --"The Players do the ska thing, and they do it well, with horn-heavy choruses and chicken-scratch guitar on exuberant tunes - Ain’t no hatin’ these Players.” - Baltimore Magazine. The Players Band is an 8-piece ska band formed in Baltimore in 1999. The Players' musical style combines ska, rock, and reggae, and is characterized by the use of upbeat horns and percussion. The band has played over 325 live shows in various states, including; Maryland, Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Virginia. The Players have performed with acts such as Grammy Award Winner The Isley Brothers, Grammy Award Winner Toots and the Maytals, The B-52s, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Joe Strummer, The English Beat, Third Eye Blind, Citizen Cope, Fishbone, The Toasters, The Skatalites, The Pietasters, The Aggrolites, The Slackers, Rebirth Brass Band, Big D and the Kids Table, The Know How, King Django, The Scofflaws, Westbound Train, Eastern Standard Time, Junkyard Band and many others. Halftime album
$11.39 "Celtic Journey" is Christopher Dean's 3rd album release since 2000. This album presents a nice mix of instrumental Irish, Scottish, and English contemporary and traditional folk music.Chris' first album, "Highland Heritage" is a collection of Irish and Scottish tunes performed on solo guitar. His second album "The Gael" presents the guitar and the addition of percussion, bass, mandolin, and second guitar on some selections. It also includes the first recorded guitar arrangement of Dougie MacLean's fiddle tune "The Gael", which attained notoriety (and a gold record for MacLean) for its inclusion in the sound track from the movie "The Last of the Mohicans"."Celtic Journey" also includes the MacLean hit tune "Ready for the Storm", in it's first recording of an instrumental arrangement for guitar. Joining Dean on this album is Irish multi-instrumentalist Brian Baynes, and world renown/award winning Highland Bag Piper, Aaron Shaw (Wicked Tinkers). This album truly is a "Celtic Journey" as it takes you from the hauntingly beautiful Northumbrian "Bonny at Morn", to the English folk tune from the middle ages, "Scarborough ...

$13.29 The Album:This is the bagpipe like you've never heard it before. Recorded in the basement of my house, this album is 100% experimental. Not only was the album entirely self-performed and self-produced, but every track was 100% improvised in front of the microphone - no pre-conceived notions. There are no tunes, there are no lyrics -- just Expression. What people have been saying: "Fascinating CD in a pipers trapped in an elevator at Wyndham Hill studios with Philip Glass kind of way. Had a great time in Piping Hot Summer Drummer, thanks for the fun class and insight into piping tricks of the trade. My wife loves doing yoga to your CD, I told her, get bent, it's mine. Waiting on your next one now...Thanks again buddy!" ---Nick from Calgary "This cd was a very pleasant surprise. It's so easy to go 'wrong' with nontraditional piping. Your recording has a very mature grasp of the unconventional potential of the bagpipes. It was like opening up the instrument to a whole new dimension. AND it's easy to listen to! Great job!" ---Virginia Franklyn, Bagpiper "I am impressed! One thing that jumped out right away is the quality of the recording. Recording and mixing down the bagpipes for a CD is no small task, and there are so many examples out there (from big name soloists and bands) of how it is done wrong. Congrats on achieving a great balance. "The CD is a great break from the traditional recordings we all have in our collections!" ---JeffA little bit more about me from my website:Andrew Douglas:Though only 21 years of age, Andrew Douglas is already known as perhaps one of the top bagpipers in North America. Andrew began learning pipes at the age of 8 from his father, Bruce. It was from Bruce that he learned many of the fundamentals that would eventually lead him to his current success. ...
