With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. Packaged in a cartoon cover that looks like a classic Alternative Tentacles release from the midst of the Ronald Reagan era of hardcore, the New Society of Anarchists' Gagged by the Flag is otherwise entirely up-to-the-minute political hardcore circa 2005: the title track concerns civil liberties threats in the wake of the Iraq war, and the rest of singer/bassist Zakk Zarnowski's lyrics are similarly incensed. ("King of the Swine," anyone?) It's almost a concept album, in fact, one that's about ten times more politically charged and authentically punk than Green Day's American Idiot. The four-piece band is similarly full-throttle throughout the album, ripping through these nine brief slices of hardcore fury with the energy of a band half their age. (Although this is only the New Society of Anarchists' second full-length album, they've been around since the early '90s.) This powerful CD landed them a slot on the '96 VANS WARPED TOUR giving the band their first taste of the road and breaking them into the national circuit.After the WARPED TOUR, NEW SOCIETY OF ANARCHISTS went back into the studio to record "RIOT GUN", the band's third release.
