Close Your Eyes album
$20.25 "...Today Is Someday- an elliptically powerful gem and a Grammy contender for 2005 Song of the Year honors..." URBAN NETWORK MAGAZINEWith a voice that has been likened to a cross between Peggy Lee, Sade and Sarah Brightman, Melody originally was going to tackle the pop/jazz songbook. However, as her skills and confidence grew, she raised the bar with a juicier challenge: to take songs that people do not think of as jazz into a jazzy place. For her double CD debut, Today is Someday, Melody wraps her dreamy vocals around material by artists ranging from R. Kelly ("Your Body's Calling") to Burt Bacharach ("Walk On By"), Al Green ("I'm Still In Love With You) to Alanis Morissette ("Your House"). Beyond the unlikely remakes, the real meat of the album lies in the haunting songs Melody composed herself such as "Lover" and "Romeovoid." Among the most affecting is "Broken." "'Broken' is about, and for, a school teacher, "Melody explains, "the uncle of a good friend who had just become single. He received a call from a friend at Social Services asking him to take in a baby boy who was sleeping in a drawer, crack-addicted and homeless. The man agreed to take him in for what was supposed to be a couple of weeks. After a few MONTHS went by, they called for the child and he told them, 'Absolutely not! I'm going to adopt him.' He adopted two more drug-addicted boys and raised all three of them alone. The oldest is 17 now. It was the most esteemed thing I'd ever heard. I thought, 'Who has that kind of love and courage anymore?' The poem 'Broken' came out of that and I turned it into a song. I wrote it for the man I call 'Al O." It's dedicated to those who do not forsake the less than perfect or the slightly broken." Most amazing is the title track, "Today is Someday." "If I were into tattoos, I would put that on some part of my body," Melody reveals. "It means get up, go and do everything you really want to do right now. Life can be a series of minutes/hours/days that just slip through your fingers - or it can be a series that leads to that destination in your soul where you've always wanted to thrive. I wrote that as a rallying call for myself first. Once I had pretty much finished it, I said to myself, 'If I ever affect a life because of this song, I will have accomplished my mission.' I'm proud to say that two people on my creative team have credited my song with giving them the courage and spirit to explore their latent dreams." An important component of the deluxe Today is Someday ...

| | Liz Antony No Moon At All CD (1999)
Close Your Eyes music CDs
$16.45 A Cincinnati society band led by trumpeter Jerry Conrad and featuring vocalist Liz Antony, this group offers a fairly predictable blend of swing era to more modern standards, some better than decent arrangements from notables as Al Kiger or Gordon Brisker, and the nonplussed, ersatz singing of the plain voiced Antony, who is on every track. The instrumental prowess of this 13-piece group far exceeds the abilities of Antony, and they are not able to lift her limited range to a higher artistic or inspirational level. At least the charts make things interesting for the musicians, as they use Kiger's talents to the hilt on the classic ballad "'Round Midnight" and the light cha cha of "Lullaby of Birdland," the latter featuring fine solos from flute player Rich Landrum, the great guitarist Kenny Poole and tenor saxophonist Randy Villars. The solos are also substantial on the Sonny Rollins calypso "St. Thomas," where multi-layered horns accent the cutesy, sexy side of Antony, her best profile. In a big band style is Gene Krupa's rockin' "Boogie Blues," while the light breezy samba take on "Old Devil Moon" shows Antony quite relaxed. More corny is the Kurt Weill evergreen "Mack the Knife" with twangy guitar from Bobby Fischer, ultimately maize colored for "Puttin' on the Ritz" where Kiger's better arrangement shines as does pianist Phil DeGreg. Antony is most imperfect singing the classic swinger "Undecided," and lacking emotional pull for the upbeat but flat title cut, and the string infested ballad "Moonlight in Vermont." A challenge or curveball might give Antony grist for her vocal mill, but it's likely she's quite comfortable and safe with this format. Too bad, for she ranks as just another average singer, while this band would do quite well on it's own, and that would be a project worth checking out. ~ Michael G. Nastos
REVIEWby Mike Breen - Cincinnati City BeatSwing music may have "died" in the eyes of the trend watchers (R.I.P. neo-swingers Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, et.al.) but classic musical styles like Big Band music are timeless, and there's still plenty of good Swing music right in our own backyard.Case in point: the new disc from vocalist Liz Antony and the Jerry Conrad Orchestra ...
