Shimabukuro is the undisputed master of the new school of ukulele playing today, one of the few people capable of pleasing both the traditionalists and the avant-garde within his genre. Thanks to this, and his stunning virtuosity on the instrument, there's been a fair amount of press about his versatility and abilities in general. This album, by itself, shows what the press is about. Despite the sonic limitations of the ukulele's small body and string count, he casually starts out with smooth jazz and some Paganini (one of his specialties), most of which is done with minimal accompaniment. After making Celine Dion's piece de resistance enjoyable for people outside the adult contemporary crowd, he quickly turns his attention to fitting the ukulele into a hard rock piece -- surprisingly well. The requisite surf song is thrown in, followed by danceable Latin jazz and some Bacharach, ending on a show of force from a live show. Queens, New York resident F.M. Cornog is a one-man band in the Stephin Merritt/Magnetic Fields tradition, originally renowned as the first American artist ever signed to legendary British indie Sarah Records. Cornog records by himself, on a cassette machine in his living room, and initially self-released cassettes on his own Hell's Gate label. He shares Merritt's taste for low-budget solo reinterpretations of soul-stirring '60s pop archetypes, but the comparison breaks down after that.
For one thing, Cornog uses more guitars in one song than Merritt might employ over the course of a full album. More importantly, where Merritt's often jaundiced and cynical lyrics are laced with dry irony and goofy similes, Cornog's emotionally direct songs are often genuinely dark, with lyrics befitting such titles as "I Am A Small Mistake" and "Prettiest Whore." ...

Elephant vs Leopard was formed during a particularly horrible summer in 2006 in the back room of a shed on a farm near Peterborough by Sam Warren (bass) and Mike Freedman (drums). The intention was to strip away the artifice and self- conscious musicianship of previous projects, focusing instead on simply playing as honestly and loudly as possible. Spike (vocals) joined the band at the end of 2007 and the three-piece began putting the finishing touches to their debut release, Safariland. The album was recorded over the course of three days at The Hatch in Worcestershire, a remote studio with no phone reception or flushing toilets. The end result is ferocious yet beautiful, a heartfelt, violent explosion of direct, unfiltered, unapologetic sentiment. The bone-rattling metallic bass and drums combo leaves plenty of room for Spike's lyrics which howl out in fury, bursting with dismay and disgust.
