"Think of a Paradigm Shift as a change from one way of thinking to another. It's a revolution, a transformation, a sort of metamorphosis. It just does not happen, but rather it is driven by agents of change." -Thomas Kuhn-Born in the spring of 2003, A Paradigm Shift is a young and still evolving five member original rock band from New Bedford, Ma. APS is a fusion of very diverse musical backgrounds and influences. The result of this unusual collaboration, is an āin your faceā progressive rock sound that is both hard-hitting and melodic, with lyrics that are inspired by the common inquiries and frustrations we are all faced with. An undying passion for music and the enduring desire to produce unique material, is what motivates this band. With the recent release of their debut album āFar From Graceā, A Paradigm Shift hopes to hit the ground running early in 2006 and share with all--their invention. Far From Grace
$16.45 This story is one of hard work, compassion and perseverance. Singer-songwriter Dave Black (Liquid Logic; Driver; My Favorite Sex) delivers his most personal work to date with the highly anticipated, newly formed project, "Year of the White Buffalo." His songs inspire and provoke and leave the listener thinking about how this old soul lives in a present day body - wise beyond his years.Seeing potential at an early age for his uncanny ear for music and the passion to pursue it, his Grandfather bought him all of his first instruments. He spent countless hours in his room honing his skills and learning his craft - this would shape his life.Eventually opportunity rose while attending his first year of college. Black quit school to join a band back in New York City with a few seasoned musicians who were a bit older than him. Now playing bass for "My Favorite Sex," Black started to experience the NYC music scene. "My Favorite Sex" had a strong underground following with a sound ahead of its time. Though never signed to a major label, the band never had a problem filling venues to capacity. This band later became the newly released sensation, "Joy Zipper," which Black still plays with from time to time.Frustrated with the lack of risk labels would, or in this case, would not invest in, Black started to search for other opportunities. Approached by the singer and guitar player of what would soon become buzz band "Liquid Logic," was just what Black had in mind. Within this band, they would collectively write and record their creative genius, building a sound that was both eclectic and psychedelic with a hard rock influence. "Liquid Logic" signed a record deal and immediately started to tour around the country opening up for name acts on huge stages. After several years together, the members of "LL" started to take on a variety of projects in recording, writing and producing and found themselves wrapped up and enjoying other aspects of the business, paving the way for each to experiment with other ventures.Black thought he had found a glimpse of hope with a band called "Driver," which was promised the world from the majors, but once again delivered nothing. He left "Driver" with life staring him in the face, asking him, "What now?" As Black says, "It's like I keep walking into the same fight and getting the shit beat out of me." "I felt it was time to throw it all to the wall and for the world to hear my solo stuff with 'Year of the White Buffalo,' where I have full creative control, I have the say on where, when and how I want to put the record out - it's my success, but it's also my failure. It's out there. I'm out there. Naked. For the world to judge. And I just feel like I'm at a point in my life where I'm ready, because honestly, after pouring ...
| | Benjamin Wagner Bloom CD (2001)
Far From Grace
$12.65 Benjamin Wagner may just be the nicest guy in the Capital District. For some reason, he just exudes friendliness, onstage and off. The 22-year-old, a recent transplant to Saratoga Springs, does not look like the typical introspective songer/songwriter type. For one thing, except for the lack of a rich tan, he could easily pass for a West Coast beach bum. For another, onstage at Caffe Lena on May 2, he wore no black. His music, though, is intriguing. On stage alone, he was somehow able to conjur up other instruments. Hi sguitar work hinted at a larger sound, and I could almost almost here a bass here, a cello there, a full band backing him up during the choruses. It's not especially surprising, though, as Wagner did lead a band, Smokey Junglefrog, back in Syracuse that was nominated for a SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music Award) for Best Alternative Band in 1992. Releasing a solo album, "Always Almost There", just four months after the band's breakup, Wagner earned himself a nomination for Best New Artist at this year's SAMMYs. The show at Lena was a release party for his new album, "Bloom." Although he's new to the area, Wagner has already hooked up with Carl Landa, who co-produced the album with Wagner. The result is the first album from a locally-based male folk singer/songwriter type that I've heard since moving to the area myself, and it's a darned good first impression. It's impossible not to compare Wagner to others who have mined the same musical vein -- elements of everyone from James Talor, Michael Penn, Jeffrey Gaines and Suzanne Vega are all present. His voice, as opposed to the power vocals that many young rockers go for, is pitched a little higher, but still carries a ...
