| | Israel Vibration Jericho CD (2000)
Teach Me...German & More Ger music CDs
$9.99 Israel Vibration is one of the last of the many great reggae harmony groups that emerged in the 1970s, a period during which "cultural" (i.e., religious and political) messages and slow, minor-key melodies dominated the music. On Jericho, the group is reduced to a duo (Cecil "Skelly" Spence and Lacelle "Wiss" Bulgin), though they are still supported by the cream of Jamaica's studio crop, including Roots Radics bassist Earl "Flabba" Holt, drummer Sly Dunbar, and an all-star horn section comprised of Dean Fraser, Junior "Chico" Chin, and Nambo Robinson. As is always the case with Israel Vibration, the melodies tend to be a bit dry; there are no hooks to speak of, and while that may be intentional and fully in line with the group's social seriousness, it gets a little bit tiresome sometimes. "Gang Bang Slam" benefits ...

Teach Me...German & More Ger songs
$12.05 This release contains the LATIN PLAYGROUND CD, a 52 page activity guide and a children's Passport Journal.
In the United States, children's music can be extremely sophomoric -- much of it is stuff that no one over the age of ten would want to listen to. But in other countries, children's music isn't necessarily childish. Offering a wide variety of children-friendly world music, Putumayo's first World Playground compilation doesn't talk down to kids -- in fact, the 12-song CD is fairly sophisticated. One doesn't have to be under ten to appreciate the material on World Playground, which ranges from Greek rembetika (Glykeria's "Tik Tik Tik") and African pop (Touré Kunda's "Fatou Yo") to Bolivian/Andean music (Colibri's "La Mariposa") and Louisiana zydeco ...

Teach Me...German & More Ger CD music
$13.99 The Modern Jazz Orchestra was a stage band that worked a little bit in Florida before breaking up. Its one recording, from 1960, comprises this reissue. Don Vincent contributed five of the eight selections and wrote all the arrangements for the 16-piece ensemble. The only well-known musician on this set is pianist Kenny Drew, although the musicianship is excellent. Despite its potentially forbidding name, the music is essentially bop to hard ...

| | Shankar Mahadevan Introducing CDs (2006)
Teach Me...German & More Ger songs
$13.65 Shankar Mahadevan is a versatile, contemporary Indian singer whose music has as much (probably more) to do with Western dance beats and pop styles as it does with the Indian classical tradition or typical Bollywood. Mahadevan first attained significant fame in India in 1998 when he scored a hit with the appropriately titled "Breathless," sung at a breakneck pace in a manner not unlike Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" or R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." But his history goes back further than that -- he spent more than a decade working with the Swedish group Mynta and also collaborated with jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin ...
