We Are Family
$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming with spiritual brother Ron Wood, Stewart offers up the cheeky "Italian Girls" and "True Blue," a track that goes along at a mid-tempo clip before exploding into a heartfelt rave-up.
Most notable is a collaboration with Martin Quittenton on "You Wear It Well," an irresistible addition to the Stewart canon. Although the Sam Cooke cover is the one spot where the soulful Scot would be expected to indulge his R&B jones, Etta James's "I'd Rather Go Blind" ...

| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
We Are Family
$13.58 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" -- it probably helps that most traditional Christmas hymns tend to fall into the same brooding minor keys that serve as the foundation for most, if not all, heavy metal songs. ...

| | Hank Williams Revealed: The Unreleased Recordings CDs (2009) DGBK
We Are Family
$30.54 1951 was a breakthrough year for Hank Williams. He had a string of moderate country hits already under his belt, but the release that year of his version of an old jazz age novelty tune called "Lovesick Blues" suddenly made him a big star. It also meant his touring schedule increased, but he still found time that year to slip into Nashville and prerecord shows for the Mother's Best Flour Company. These good-natured and intimate performances were cut to acetate discs and then played over the air on Nashville's WSM radio station. Brittle, disposable, and made for only a few plays, these acetates were then shelved and forgotten until they were literally rescued from the trash in the '70s by an alert WSM employee. In all, 72 of these shows survived, containing some 143 songs, and this three-disc set is the second installment in Time Life's CD preservation of this amazing treasure trove. The performances are intimate and relaxed, and Williams tackles an amazingly varied set list, singing old mountain ballads, hymns, cowboy tunes, and delivers recitations of parlor poems and other various cautionary tales as well. What emerges is a full, rounded portrait of Williams at his creative and commercial peak. "Lovesick Blues" is here, along with fine versions of "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)," "A Mansion on the Hill," and the Williams-composed gospel classic "I Saw the Light," among others, including a spirited instrumental romp through the old fiddle tune "Eighth of January," which celebrated the British defeat at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815 (Jimmie Driftwood added lyrics to the tune and had a huge hit with the resulting "The Battle of New Orleans" in 1959). That these long-lost recordings are an absolute treasure simply ...

| | Harry Connick, Jr Songs I Heard CD (2001)
We Are Family
$6.99 SONGS I HEARD won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
Never content to rest on his laurels, Harry Connick, Jr. wrapped up the end of 2001 simultaneously releasing the mostly solo 30 and the more complexly arranged SONGS I HEARD. The theme for the latter collection of songs can be traced to material heard by Connick as a youth that he decided to pay tribute to and have some fun with a little later in life.
Not surprisingly, children's films prove to be an excellent source of material. "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" (from Mary Poppins) becomes an infectious, whiz-bang shuffle that sounds as if a party was going on during the recording session, while "Oompa Loompa" (of WILLY WONKA fame) is given an off-kilter solo turn. The Wizard Of Oz's "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead" gets a be-bop treatment, and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" arrives with an ominous timpani-soaked intro before Connick eases it into its lush arrangement. The New Orleans native also has a ball with songs from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, including a gorgeous reading of "Edelweiss," and "Do-Re-Mi" swings hard with accompanists dropping in throughout the song.

He's backed by a boisterous rhythm section filled with percussion and rocking guitars.” -Editor, www.download.com"...Cruz's performances are also quite visual: Xande feverishly pounding the surdo, a bass drum, or the congas, while getting his body and his dreadlocks into the rhythm...”-Regina Medina, Daily News Philadelphia“An exciting eclectic Brazilian band that fuses traditional Brazilian rhythms with modern soul popping energy that gets the crowd chanting to the sounds of Brazil. Xande Cruz is a true showman, playing over twenty different percussion instruments, he blesses audiences with magical rhythms with energizing vocals.XANDE CRUZ BIOA descendant of an indigenous Brazilian father and a Bahian mother, Xande was born and raised in the largest city in South America, Sao Paulo. Cruz was profoundly inspired by Popular Brazilian Music (MPB), traditional Afro-Brazilian music and listening to his father’s vinyl records as a child. Later, after moving to New York, Cruz drew from his exposure to the 80’s hip-hop movement and electronica. As a percussionist, Cruz toured with samba schools in Japan and South Korea, and performed with various Brazilian pop bands, African drum ensembles, dance troupes and theatrical productions. Xande Cruz's debut solo project, LUZ, approaches an atypical sound from his rhythmic, percussive roots perspective and from there creates memorable harmonies woven into the fabric of his art and his identity. Cruz’s lyrics are inspired by experiences of ...
