Gloria Gaynor album
$17.75 Silent for much of the '90s, Huey Lewis & The News re-emerged in 2001 with PLAN B, their first album in seven years. Ignoring the prevailing rap-rock and bubblegum trends of the times, this Frisco outfit whipped up a batch of tunes that sound like contemporary outtakes from a late '60s Stax/Volt session. Songs like "Let Her Go And Start Over," "Rhythm Ranch," and "My Other Woman" all benefit from Lewis's warm and raspy delivery, punchy horn arrangements and ringing harmonies. Guitarists Johnny Colla and Chris Hayes also pump up PLAN B with plenty of fat bluesy riffs that resonate on cuts like "I Never Think About You" and the rollicking title track.
Highlights abound, whether it's an infectious party anthem ("We're Not Here For A Long Time [We're Here For A Good Time]") or a slow-burn duet with country star Wynonna ("I'm Not In Love Yet"). Huey and the boys even tip their collective hat to old pal Nick Lowe (who convinced them to come over to the UK and get in on the pub-rock boom when they were still known as Clover) by executing a snappy version of "When I Write The Book" smothered in organ.
Most artists who show up on Behind the Music have a tragic tale to tell, whether it's drug addiction, the death of a loved one, or a bitter falling out between longtime bandmates. Not Huey Lewis & the News -- the one time they faced tragedy is when they thought Ray Parker, Jr. ripped off "I Want a New Drug" for his theme to Ghostbusters. Apart from that, everything's been pretty great, because they're a bar band (if they'd been from England, you'd call 'em pub rock) that made good and they've always been grateful for their success. When the hits stopped coming sometime during the first Bush administration, they graciously stepped back from the spotlight; during the '90s, they only released one new album, and that was just a covers record. Ten years later, they finally reemerged with Plan B, a record of original material (barring a cover of one of Nick Lowe's best songs, "When I Write the Book") that helped showcase their new, expanded lineup with a full horn section. Some bands might verge on bloat with a new horn section, but not the News -- it just emphasizes that Plan B is a return to their roots, a lean, soul-inflected, driving rock & roll record. And that "Plan B" in the title certainly alludes to the bandmembers' decision to give up any hopes of chart success in favor of just making a record of music they like, and the gambit pays back better than anyone could have hoped. This is an unpretentious, utterly likeable record, filled with clever, catchy songs that would sound great in a packed club on a Friday night. And these are good songs, songs that could hold their own with "Workin' for a Livin'," "Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do," and "Some of My Lies Are True" -- they're nearly as ...

Gloria Gaynor CD music
$16.45 Who doesn't love a good mix CD? The folks at Pure Hemp and One Love Entertainment certainly must, and they went above and beyond to bring the 2-disc smorgasbord that is One Love Vol. 1 to life Essential to any commercial compilation CD is a mix of styles and musical worlds, hopefully alerting the listener to new sounds while peppering the experience with familiarity. If you're a frequent web visitor of HGMN, Jambands, or Jambase, you've certainly heard of a lot of the bands on this set. There's plenty that you probably haven't heard though, and the relatively unknown tracks are scattered amongst a group of must-have selections from some of the best bands touring today.Washington state quintet Flowmotion kicks off the proceedings with "Got's Mine", a slinky prog-soul singalong with an apropos "all one people" backing vocal. It's a prime spot on this compilation for a young, enthusiastic band such as Flowmotion. NYC-based beat purveyors Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra offer the dramatic brass and polyrhythmic instrumentation of "Mister Sinister" next, and the song's political tone is a nice fit here. Next, from the hotbed of Athens, GA is funk outfit Entropy, and their hip-hop-heavy sound is well represented with the angry outlook and distressed rhymes of "The Party Platform."Soldiers Of Jah Army, a wonderful modern reggae outfit, grooves right into the mix with the righteously slow-burning "You Don't Know" just before Granola Funk Express adds the decidedly non-subtle hip-hop jam "Everybody Get High". The prevailing afro-hip-reggae vibe is broken by Robert Walter's 20th Congress and their ...

Hal Blaine was one of the most innovative and gifted session drummers ever to come down the pike, at least the pike that was the L.A. studio scene in the '60s and '70s. Being a talented man with friends in high places, it was perhaps only natural that he managed to record a solo album or two. However, his career as a highly used session drummer and percussionist didn't leave him a whole lot of time to develop as a songwriter or singer, so it's not surprising that his solo albums are nothing to write home about, including this one. Deuces, "T's," ...

$9.59 SongwritingThe first band I was in during high school in Farmington, CT, was Da' Plain Truth. We were a bad, suburban rap group. The songs were bad. The one show we did was probably bad. Me thinking I should be a rapper was also bad. But I do trace a lot of my lyric writing and vocal delivery back to this. I think that I often have a rhythmic delivery not common in acoustic music. While attending the University of South Dakota I really started writing songs. I counted about 180 once but that includes a lot of bad things that I've long since forgotten. Right now I have around 50 that I think are good or will be with some work.Which brings me to my theory of writing. If you want 50 songs you feel good about, you have to write 130 songs that are embarrassing.MusicWhen I ask people who they think I sound like, most commonly I get Barenaked Ladies, The Lemonheads, They Might Be Giants, and Paul Westerberg of The Replacements. I get why people hear them, but I'm not sure any of them are quite right. Which is fine."What kind of music do you play?" is a common question. I usually say Alt-acoustic. It's almost all acoustic, but it's not what people think of when they think of folk. Folk has a more delicate quality to it. Even my slower songs are not delicate.I read an article in Spin long ago where some guy coined the term "acoustica". He applied it to Ani DiFranco and Duncan Sheik amongst others. Now, I don't think I sound like either of them unless you think we're all in the same genera then BOOM! I totally sound like them. But maybe there is a similar aesthetic. Not sonically, but in energy?HealthIn 2001, 27 yrs old, I was diagnosed with arthritis. I was at a point where I couldn't predict when I would get knee, wrist, or back pain. I was on Viox for a while and got nothing except heart palpitations.Turns out I was misdiagnosed. What I actually have is a wheat allergy. In my case, when I over dose on wheat I get arthritis-like ...
