BEAUTY IS A RARE THING contains Ornette Coleman's entire surviving recorded output for the Atlantic label from 1959-1961 (a number of other sessions were recorded, but they were destroyed, along with countless other priceless Atlantic masters, in their infamous warehouse fire of the mid-1970s.) BEAUTY IS A RARE THING features over seven hours of music, six previously unreleased tracks, and contains a booklet of photos, a discography and contemporary commentaries by Ornette Coleman and a host of supporters and detractors.
This epic 6-CD set chronicles the joy and controversy that distinguished alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman's coming out party on Atlantic Records. Coleman was a transplanted Texan, a jazzman steeped in the blues, who struggled throughout the '50s on the Los Angeles scene just to ...

Hotel Tara 2 - The Intimate Side Of Buddha-Lounge songs
$13.05 David and Steve Gordon, the go-to compilers and DJs for the Sequoia label, are back with another thoroughly enjoyable and thematically questionable compilation of chillout groove music for the post-new age. Call it "mystical world groove" or "sensuous nu-global" music, but really, what it is is a three-way cross between worldbeat, ambient, and new age music. It avoids the new age label in part by being genuinely concerned with groove and in part by downplaying the facile, faux mysticism by which the most shameless of the new agers tried to spin simplistic straw into spiritual gold. But at the same time, those who appreciate the practical aspects of new age music (namely, the way it facilitates relaxation, meditation, and/or seduction) will find plenty to love in these Sequoia collections as well. Funky as they can get -- and they do get pretty funky at times -- they're never anything less than pleasant and gentle. Hotel Tara doesn't have anything to do with hotels, but it does feature a very cool surf-derived bassline on Ginkgo Garden's "Woodland Ride," a fun mix of faux Gregorian chant and found-sound ...

Hotel Tara 2 - The Intimate Side Of Buddha-Lounge album
$11.95 Recorded live at the Waldorf Astoria, New York, New York and the Sands, Las Vegas, Nevada on Feburary 20, 1957 and November 3-5, 1960. Originally released on RCA (1038) & RCA (2364).
Vocalist Lena Horne is most widely known for her film appearances and nightclub performances, and this excellent collection offers up two of the latter, one live set from 1957 at New York City's prestigious Waldorf Astoria Hotel and another from 1960 at Las Vegas's renowned Sands venue. And as this 20-track release makes clear, the Brooklyn-born singer was often more comfortable in front of an audience than in the studio.
Rather than relying on signature tunes such as "Stormy Weather," Horne goes for more adventurous set lists that include energetic numbers such as "Come Runnin'" and "New Fangled Tango," along with medleys of beloved composers, including Duke Ellington, Cole ...
