Featuring six studio tracks and a full 1947 live show, Town Hall Jazz Concert features the late-'40s version of saxophonist Charlie Barnet's big band. Included in the band at the time were such eventual legends as trumpeters Clark Terry and Doc Severinsen along with alto saxophonist Bud Shank. Although not as well known as such swing-era contemporaries as Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, Barnet's band was a superb swing outfit that also flirted heavily with such cutting-edge styles as bebop and the neophyte West Coast cool sound. Featured here are such solid tracks as Bunny Briggs' mellow vocal take on "Dirty Rotten Shame Blues" and the deliciously hip scat cut "Bop a Boogie." The concert recording from Town Hall in New York City is a stellar affair and really showcases how vital and swinging Barnet's band was live. ~ Matt Collar

By means of this discount-priced compilation, it is possible to trace Eddie Fisher's triumphs on the album charts in 1952, the year of his greatest popularity. (This is not, however, the same thing as tracing his equal success on the singles charts. In the 1950s, record companies usually did not include singles on albums, but treated the two formats as entirely separate entities.) All three of the eight-song, 10" LPs he released in 1952 are combined on this disc. When Fisher began to hit consistently, RCA threw together his first album, Eddie Fisher Sings, mostly out of previously rejected tracks he had cut dating back to 1949. With this CD, Telarc squeezes another package out of a month-long salute to the jazz master's 75th birthday at New York's Blue Note jazz club, advertising them as Dizzy Gillespie's last recordings (they're not). What it is, is a mixed blessing, an obviously heartfelt tribute to an aging legend by several of his disciples, conservative to a fault in its adherence to the basic bop language that Dizzy and the album's co-honoree Charlie Parker helped invent. Dizzy's solos are like fallen swans; the chops simply weren't there anymore to execute his still-potent ideas, and reviewers in Dizzy's final years found his decline painful to report (many pretended not to notice). Steve Tyrell has attracted enough attention for his two regular albums, A New Standard and Standard Time, that he is almost beyond journalists' usual tack of describing a new singer's voice by who he sounds like; pretty soon, they'll be saying that other singers sound like him. But it remains true that if you have never heard him but you are familiar with Dr. John, your first reaction upon hearing him is likely to be that you are listening to Dr. John. Well, maybe a younger Dr. John, and one whose accent isn't quite as swampy. But the basic elements -- the grit and gravel in the tone, the slurred, deep South phrasing -- are much the same.
