Secret Skin album
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips ...
| | Tom Petty Live Anthology CDs (2009)
Secret Skin CD music
$19.34 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 ...

Secret Skin songs
$11.18 Lou Reed never struck anyone as one of the happiest guys in rock & roll, so some fans were taken aback when his 1984 album New Sensations kicked off with "I Love You, Suzanne," a catchy up-tempo rocker that sounded a lot like a pop tune. After reaffirming his status as one of rock's greatest ...

| | Cascade Folk Trio Old Street CD (2003)
Secret Skin songs
$18.99 The name might include the word folk, but don't be fooled by that. If you come into this expecting hardcore Armenian acoustic folk music, heavy on the reedy duduk, you're in for a shock. This band, part of the Armenian diaspora based in New York, takes a very broad definition of folk music to include beats, synthesizer, dance, and pop music. And the record is all the better for it. There's still music that passes any definition of folk, like "Bad Days," where gospel touches revive an old song, but you'd better also be prepared for jazz, some sublime vocals -- ranging from the acerbic to the smooth -- and, of course, the duduk (the Armenian national instrument) working through it all. Bandleader Arman Aghajanyan does a great job of marshaling his forces, and walking the fine line between the future and the sensibility of the past. By and large he manages it, although little side trips into jazz don't work too well, and on a couple of occasions the pop sheen is a bit too glossy. But it's something that can easily break out of the ghetto of folk music (and Armenian folk music, at that!) to find a broader acceptance. Not perfect, perhaps, but another example of people reinventing the folk tradition and keeping it a wonderful living, breathing thing. ~ Chris Nickson
{ the group } Cascade Folk Trio represents the collaboration of three of Armenian music's most talented vocalists, Arman Aghajanyan , Ohanna Mtghyan and Armen Papikyan. Already acclaimed individually as artists, their union has resulted in the creation of one of the most popular musical groups in today's worldwide Armenian Diaspora. The trio, based in New York and Los Angeles, has created a musical force whose chemistry, stage presence, unique image and fresh interpretation of Armenian music have not previously been witnessed in the music world. In 1999, Aghajanyan, Mtghyan and Papikyan joined forces in New York City to form the Trio. They ...

| | Morning 40 Federation Ticonderoga CD (2006)
Secret Skin CD music
$13.25 Morning 40 Federation's self-titled 2004 album mixed rock and funk with more traditional New Orleans styles with interesting, if erratic and sometimes bombastic, results. The approach hasn't changed that much on 2006's Ticonderoga, except that the funk element seems considerably more dominant. It's a better-recorded album than Morning 40 Federation, and not as overdone in its execution, but still a little hammy. There's a party-in-the-face-of-the-apocalypse attitude in some of the material, and a rather in-your-face rock-funk chunk to much of it, though it's not as in-your-face (and considerably more New Orleans-ized) as, say, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. While these are ...
