Focus Focus III CD (1972)
Apple Box songs Riding on the success of their hit single "Hocus Pocus" from the revolutionary Moving Waves album, Focus got to work on this, their third LP in four years. While the debut album featured a style not too dissimilar to the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Focus' second LP, Moving Waves, was purely instrumental and wholly serious-minded. Focus III kept this same sound, but approached it with a jollier, more accessible tone. As with its predecessor, Focus III featured only one tune that would have a chance of being a hit single. The enjoyable rhythm of "Sylvia," partnered with Jan Akkerman's victorious guitar solo, some of Van Leer's finest organ work, Bert Ruiter's tight basslines, and Pierre Van Der Linden's mellow drumming, assured the track classic status. "Sylvia" found worldwide success and gained the band valuable radio and press exposure. The song remains one of the most loved and best remembered songs from Focus' catalog. The consistency in musical quality throughout Focus III is enough to merit any listeners' respect. To be frank, this LP has it all: diverse songs, astounding musicianship, one of the finest singles ever released -- Focus III should unquestionably be ranked alongside the likes of Revolver, Dark Side of the Moon, and any others of rock's greatest. ~ Ben Davies

Aislers Set Terrible Things Happen CD (1998)
Apple Box CD music This group is essentially Amy Linton, the guitarist/drummer of the late Henry's Dress, an underground but well-liked San Francisco indie-pop act. Now on her own, she's fronting this group with members of three other Bay-area bands, though half this LP is just Linton solo. On the full-band tracks, the group claims loads of great British mod influences from the Who and Action, and further later-'60s American pop heroes. But what you hear is a woman who sounds uncannily like the Shirelles' Shirley Owens Alston singing lullabies that nicely seem at odds with the agitated, distorted but still jangly guitar sounds such 30-year-old blueprints don't mention. On the opening "Friends of the Heroes," they even add a super-silent version of Jesus & Mary Chain's white-noise throb. Otherwise, Linton's solo tracks such as "Mary's Song" sound more like a young woman out to break your heart, with a few halfhearted strums of her guitar; background tapped-drums; that purring, almost lovelorn/teary Alston-like voice; and chamber hushed, demo-production value. Nice mix all around (P.O. Box 14731, Berkeley, CA 94712). ~ Jack Rabid

Darren Lock Start CD (1999)
Apple Box songs This was originally recorded in 1999 and I always considered it a lesser work, probably mistakenly, so it never got a full proper release. In 2009, I decided to revisit my old recordings and convert them to the music software I've been using for a while. This process involved me remixing and remastering those old tracks and removing the audio grime and editing the mistakes allowed me to present these recordings in their best possible state for the first time.
The "Start" album suddenly had a resurgence on an alternative music website logging in over 17,000 playbacks so I decided that it was only fair that I give this collection of recordings a proper audience. A edited version is available on my "Sows' Ears and Silk Purses" box set, but this is it in its entireity, cleaned up and restored for the 21st century.
I hope you enjoy it!
