(1 Customer Review)
THE BEST OF SLAUGHTER is a slim 10-track sampler of the pop-metal band popular in the early 1990s. The group's crunchy metal approach leavened by hooky melodies found favor with audiences who also liked Winger, Warrant, Skid Row, Poison, and other staples of the hair-metal era. Though the compilation overlooks "Fly to the Angels" and "Spend My Life" (two hits from the band's debut), it does include "Up All Night," their best-known song. Highlights from the band's later albums round out the set, making it a tidy package for pop-metal fans, or those wishing to indulge in some hair-metal nostalgia. Best Of Slaughter album
$7.85 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by George Marino (1998, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
From the first mega-chorus shout of the album-opening "In and Out of Love," it's obvious that 7800 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT marks an evolution from Bon Jovi's debut. The image got bigger and so did the sound. The album went gold, and a year later the band shot to the stratosphere with SLIPPERY WHEN WET.
"The Price of Love" is a tight, well-written rocker categorized by its memorable Bon Jovi hook. "Only Lonely" is perfect pop metal with a great riff and even catchier solo. "Silent Night" is a true power ballad, before the term denoted the mandatory first single from every ...

| | Dokken Hell To Pay CD (2004)
Best Of Slaughter songs
$8.69 Singer Don Dokken and drummer Mick Brown may be all that's left of the original Dokken, but the group's signature blend of pop and heavy metal has changed little since their late-'80s heyday. The problem is, they were never that interesting to begin with. On Hell to Pay, the role of ex-guitar legend George Lynch is played by ex-Warlock axe slinger John Levin, and the departure of original bass player Jeff Pilson brings ex-Ted Nugent and Yngwie Malmsteen collaborator Barry Sparks into the fold, resulting in a record that's impeccably played but mediocre at best. Levin brings an elegant, almost Middle Eastern sense of melodicism to the promising opener, "Last Goodbye," and an old-school bluesy swagger to "Haunted," and Don Dokken's voice has settled nicely into a smooth lupine growl that complements the tight arrangements, but there's a blandness to the whole affair that envelops the record after "Prozac Nation." Perhaps it's the fact that the obligatory power ballad, "Care for You," which is apparently so powerful that it needs to be played again at the end of the record in an "unplugged" version -- do keyboards not need to be plugged in? -- or maybe it's the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/solo/chorus heavy metal song template that usually only works for one ...
| | Mr Big Greatest Hits CD (2004)
Best Of Slaughter album
$6.09 Since Mr. Big had their big hit with the campfire singalong "To Be With You," it's easy for the average listener to assume that Mr. Big is one of the poppiest of the pop-metal bands, when precisely the opposite is the case. Mr. Big was formed by two virtuosos, shred kings Paul Gilbert (formerly the guitarist for Racer X) and Billy Sheehan, who came to prominence as the bassist for David Lee Roth's solo band, and the band was designed as a way for both to flash their chops. At least at first, songs were a secondary consideration, a vehicle for the two to play. Tunes were gradually introduced to the band, taking hold on their second album, but remnants of the instrumentalists-first mentality persisted, even after Gilbert flew the coop at the end of the '90s, since he was replaced with fellow guitar virtuoso Richie Kotzen, who briefly filled C.C. Deville's shoes in Poison. Both eras are accurately represented on Rhino's 2004 collection Greatest Hits, which contains all the hits, all the songs that were transcribed in guitar magazines, and a few rarities to boot. Those expecting a bunch of "To Be With You"s or even pop-metal in the vein of Poison will find this a bit disappointing, since this isn't very hooky and on the harder side of pop-metal, giving Gilbert and Sheehan room to roam. But fans of those two, as well as Kotzen, will find Greatest Hits a satisfying distillation of Mr. Big's erratic ...
| | Motley Crue Shout At The Devil CD (1983) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Best Of Slaughter CD music
$36.99 Principally recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, California. Includes interviews conducted by Alan K. Stout.
Whereas Motley Crue's 1981 debut TOO FAST FOR LOVE was glam rock-based (both musically and visually), 1983's now-classic sophomore effort, SHOUT AT THE DEVIL, had more in common with heavy metal. The album served as The Crue's commercial breakthrough, going double-platinum shortly after it's release (and eventually reaching quadruple-platinum status) and spawning several popular MTV videos. Motley Crue toured behind SHOUT as an opener for Ozzy Osbourne, and the success of the album also helped open the floodgates for the L.A. metal scene.
SHOUT AT THE DEVIL is undoubtedly Motley Crue's all-time best. The set includes anthems galore (the title track, "Looks That Kill," and the melodic "Too Young to Fall in Love"), lesser-known tales of sex, violence, and sin ("Bastard," "Red Hot," "Knock 'Em Dead Kid," "Ten Seconds to Love," "Danger"), and a vicious cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter." All the tracks are winners. SHOUT's satanic cover imagery and graphic lyrics drew fire from religious organizations, as did the band's rock mag-fueled hedonistic reputation. Nonetheless, SHOUT AT THE DEVIL remains one of the finest metal albums of the '80s.
